Jalpesh Mela at Shivaratri

The Shiva temple at Jalpesh near Maynaguri holds one of north Bengal's oldest fairs around Maha Shivaratri. Pilgrims, traders and families from across the Dooars and Cooch Behar fill the fields around the temple for days. It is about 25–30 km from Lataguri.

Jalpesh is a Shiva temple a few kilometres from Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri district. Local histories link its building to the Koch kings of Cooch Behar in the 17th century, with later rebuilding by the Raikat rulers of Baikunthapur; the details vary by source, so treat dates you hear on the spot with care. The linga sits below floor level in a pit, which pilgrims reach by stepping down.

The mela grows up around Maha Shivaratri, in February or March, with stalls of bamboo ware, sweets, utensils, toys and clothes, rides for children, and a great deal of jalebi. A second wave of devotees comes in the month of Shravan, many carrying water from the Teesta on foot. It is a working pilgrim fair, not a show, and the crowds are local.

For a Dooars visitor it is an easy half-day from Lataguri. Go early, leave shoes at a stall that keeps them for a few rupees, carry small change, and keep your phone in a front pocket in the crush near the temple gate.

Tips

  • Reach before 8 am on the main Shivaratri day; by noon the approach roads jam.
  • Dress modestly and expect to remove shoes well before the shrine.
  • Combine it with an afternoon Gorumara watchtower slot booked in advance from Lataguri.

Most hill festivals follow lunar calendars, so dates move each year. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

When is the Jalpesh Mela?

It centres on Maha Shivaratri, which falls in February or March by the lunar calendar, and the fair runs for several days around it. Exact dates and length are set locally each year, so check current status before you travel. Shravan, in July and August, brings a separate stream of pilgrims but not the full fair.

How do I get to Jalpesh from Lataguri?

Jalpesh is roughly 25–30 km from Lataguri via Maynaguri, about 45 minutes to an hour by car. A hired car for the half-day costs roughly ₹1,500–2,000. On the main festival day, local buses and shared autos from Maynaguri are packed, so a car with a driver who knows the parking fields saves time.

Can non-Hindus visit Jalpesh temple?

Visitors of other faiths generally walk the fair and the temple grounds without trouble; entry to the inner shrine is a matter for the temple on the day. Dress modestly, remove shoes, follow the queue and ask before photographing people at prayer. Inside the sanctum, photography is usually not allowed.

Is the Jalpesh Mela suitable for children?

Yes, with care. Children enjoy the rides, toy stalls and sweets, but the crowd near the temple gate is dense on Shivaratri. Agree a meeting point, write your phone number on a card in your child's pocket, and keep small children on the fair side rather than in the temple queue.
