Losar, Dashain, Tihar and Saga Dawa
The hills celebrate three calendars: Tibetan, Hindu and Gregorian. That means a festival in most months, and mask dances (cham) at the monasteries in winter.
Rooms fill around Durga Puja and Diwali, when much of Bengal heads to the hills. Book early and check current status before you travel.
Tibetan New Year at Ghoom and Rumtek, Dashain and Tihar across the Nepali-speaking hills, Bumchu at Tashiding and Pang Lhabsol in Sikkim. Most follow lunar calendars, so the dates move each year.
