Hornbills do not keep a timetable, so this trip gives you three dawns. Each morning you go out with a local guide who knows which trees are fruiting that week; each afternoon you rest, walk the plantations or visit nearby places.

We use a reserved car for the climb from the plains, which is steep and has few shared jeeps, and for the short trips to Ahaldara and Namthing Pokhri. Your homestay host can arrange the guide. Mahananda sanctuary closes in the monsoon, so this trip runs from October to May.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is the price per person?

Yes. ₹12,500 is per person on twin sharing for Indian nationals, from NJP or Bagdogra and back, as an indicative 2025–26 figure. Solo travellers pay more for rooms and cars; groups of four sharing a car pay less. We round to the nearest ₹500.

Can we start from Bagdogra airport instead of NJP?

Yes. Bagdogra is about 30 minutes from Siliguri and a little further from NJP. Shared autos and taxis link the airport to the Siliguri jeep stands. With a reserved car, the fare from Bagdogra is about the same as from NJP.

Can we change the number of nights?

Yes. Add a night where you want more time, usually in the village stops, or drop one on a tight schedule. Keep at least two nights in any place where you want a clear dawn view, since weather can spoil one morning.

What are my chances of seeing hornbills?

Reasonable with three dawns and a good local guide, especially from March to May. Great and rufous-necked hornbills both occur, but nothing is guaranteed. Fruiting trees matter more than anything; your guide will follow them.

Do I need a permit for birding at Latpanchar?

Not for village roads. Forest trails inside Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary need permission and usually a fee and a guide, and the sanctuary closes in the monsoon. Check current status before you travel.

Is this trip suitable for beginners?

Yes. Guides are patient, the walking is mostly on roads and wide paths, and the village is a peaceful place to learn. Bring binoculars and a field guide or app, and be ready for early starts.

Can we see salamanders at Namthing Pokhri on this trip?

Only in the monsoon, roughly June to August, when they breed, and this trip runs outside that season because Mahananda closes then. In the dry months Namthing Pokhri is a quiet forest lake, still worth a short visit.

Why a reserved car rather than shared jeeps?

Shared jeeps to Latpanchar are few, and the trips to Ahaldara and Namthing Pokhri need a car at dawn. Shared between two, the car is good value. Solo travellers can use the few jeeps and hire local cars for short trips.

What should I wear for birding walks?

Dull greens, browns and greys, layers for cold dawns, a cap, long trousers and closed shoes. Avoid bright colours and noisy rain gear. Bring a small backpack with water and a snack.
