Two-foot gauge, a UNESCO line since 1999
The line opened to Darjeeling in 1881 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. It climbs from about 100 m at the plains to 2,258 m at Ghoom, one of the highest railway stations in India, then drops slightly into Darjeeling.
Full-line services, steam joyrides and diesel joyrides change with the season, landslides and track work. Book on the IRCTC site and check current status before you travel.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway climbs from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling on track 610 mm wide, with loops and zig-zag reverses instead of tunnels. Ride the full line, the steam joyride to Batasia and Ghoom, or just the Kurseong stretch.
