This is Kurseong for travellers who want comfort without Darjeeling's grand-hotel prices. You stay one night in a restored colonial-era house among the tea gardens and two nights in the government lodge where the toy train passes the restaurant, with a private car to take the effort out of the hills.

The days are gentle: a tea morning at Makaibari, the history of Netaji's house and the Jesuit hill, a guided drive through the Dow Hill forest to the old chimney, and a toy train ride if the line is running. It works well for honeymooners and older couples.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is the price per person?

Yes. ₹21,000 is per person on twin sharing for Indian nationals, from NJP or Bagdogra and back, as an indicative 2025–26 figure. Solo travellers pay more for rooms and cars; groups of four sharing a car pay less. We round to the nearest ₹500.

Can we start from Bagdogra airport instead of NJP?

Yes. Bagdogra is about 30 minutes from Siliguri and a little further from NJP. Shared autos and taxis link the airport to the Siliguri jeep stands. With a reserved car, the fare from Bagdogra is about the same as from NJP.

Can we change the number of nights?

Yes. Add a night where you want more time, usually in the village stops, or drop one on a tight schedule. Keep at least two nights in any place where you want a clear dawn view, since weather can spoil one morning.

Why only one night at Cochrane Place?

It is a heritage hotel priced well above the rest of Kurseong. One night gives you the experience; the Tourist Lodge for the other two keeps the trip affordable and puts you beside the toy train. You can of course stay longer if you prefer.

Is this trip good for a honeymoon?

Yes. It has one special night in a heritage house, a slow pace, a private car and quiet tea-garden settings, at a fraction of Darjeeling's luxury prices. Ask for a valley-view room at the Tourist Lodge.

Will we definitely ride the toy train?

Only if services are running and you can get seats. Services through Kurseong change with the season and with landslide repairs. Book on IRCTC early and check current status before you travel; the trip still works without it.

Can older travellers manage this trip?

Yes. Most sights are reached by car, and walks are short and optional. The climb to Eagle's Crag can be replaced by a drive up most of the way. Ask hotels for ground-floor rooms if stairs are a problem.

Do we need a guide for Dow Hill and Chimney?

It is optional, but a local guide brings the history, the forest and the ghost lore to life and knows where to stop. We budget about ₹2,000 per person for a half day with transport shared.

What is the best time for this trip?

March to May for tea and spring, and October to December for clear skies. Winter nights are cold; the heritage hotel and the lodge both have heating options, but confirm when booking.
