Cochrane Place

A restored colonial-era house on the Pankhabari road below Kurseong, run as a small heritage hotel with tea-garden views. Our one splurge suggestion in this land: more expensive than a homestay, but far less than Darjeeling's big heritage hotels.

Cochrane Place stands on the Pankhabari road below Kurseong town, with tea slopes falling away towards the plains. The hotel is built around an old hill house, its rooms are furnished in a period style, and the terraces look across the tea slopes of the valley towards the plains. Ask the hotel directly about meals, tea tastings and garden walks, as what is offered changes with the season.

We include it for travellers on our Comfort journeys and for couples who want one special night in the middle of a budget trip. It is a short drive to Makaibari and about 10–15 minutes to Kurseong bazaar. Prices vary widely by room and season, so compare directly with the hotel and check current status before you travel.

Why we suggest it

  • Heritage house with tea-garden views
  • Short drive to Makaibari and Kurseong
  • A one-night splurge that still costs less than Darjeeling's grand hotels

We list rates as indicative ranges. We do not take commission from this property for being listed here. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Is Cochrane Place a budget hotel?

No. It is a mid-to-upper-range heritage hotel, usually ₹6,000–11,000 a room depending on room and season. We suggest it as a single splurge night on a Comfort or honeymoon trip. For a budget stay in the same valley, the Makaibari village homestays cost far less and include meals.

How far is Cochrane Place from Kurseong town?

It is on the Pankhabari road below Kurseong, about 10–15 minutes by car from the bazaar and station. Walking up is possible but steep. Shared jeeps on the Pankhabari road pass by and cost very little; the hotel can also arrange a car for pick-up from Siliguri.

Can I visit Makaibari from Cochrane Place?

Yes. Makaibari's factory and village area are a short drive from the hotel on the same Pankhabari road. Factory visits depend on the season and the day's work, so ask the hotel or the estate a day ahead. March to November is the plucking season.
