Kurseong and Mirik are close on the map but very different. Kurseong is a busy school and railway town with a strong history; Mirik is a quiet lake town in a valley of tea and oranges. Together they make a well-balanced first trip to the Darjeeling hills without the crowds of Darjeeling itself.

You go up to Kurseong by shared jeep, use one reserved car to cross to Mirik with stops at the tea viewpoints, and come down from Mirik by jeep. Rooms are a mix of family homestays and mid-range hotels.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is the price per person?

Yes. ₹13,000 is per person on twin sharing for Indian nationals, from NJP or Bagdogra and back, as an indicative 2025–26 figure. Solo travellers pay more for rooms and cars; groups of four sharing a car pay less. We round to the nearest ₹500.

Can we start from Bagdogra airport instead of NJP?

Yes. Bagdogra is about 30 minutes from Siliguri and a little further from NJP. Shared autos and taxis link the airport to the Siliguri jeep stands. With a reserved car, the fare from Bagdogra is about the same as from NJP.

Can we change the number of nights?

Yes. Add a night where you want more time, usually in the village stops, or drop one on a tight schedule. Keep at least two nights in any place where you want a clear dawn view, since weather can spoil one morning.

How do I get from Kurseong to Mirik?

There are no direct shared jeeps, so we use a reserved car, about 2.5–3 hours, either down towards the foothills and up the Dudhia road, or over the ridge via Ghoom and Sukhia Pokhari. A car costs about ₹2,800–3,500. On a tight budget, go via Siliguri by two shared jeeps.

Is four nights enough for Kurseong and Mirik?

Yes for the highlights of both towns. If you want village time, add a night at Makaibari or Sittong. If you want Darjeeling too, add two nights there between Kurseong and Mirik.

Which is better, Kurseong or Mirik?

They suit different moods. Kurseong has more history and the toy train; Mirik is calmer, with a lake and tea views. This trip gives you both, two nights each, which we think is the right balance.

Is this trip good for a couple on a budget?

Yes. At about ₹13,000 per person for four nights it is good value, with a heritage-feel option in Kurseong if you want to upgrade one night. Ask for a lake-view room in Mirik for a little extra.

Can we see Kanchenjunga on this trip?

Possibly, on clear winter mornings from Eagle's Crag in Kurseong or Rameetay Dara in Mirik, but neither is a classic Kanchenjunga viewpoint. If the mountain matters, add a night in Darjeeling or at Latpanchar for Ahaldara.

Can children do this trip?

Yes. Drives are short, the lake walk is level, and the toy train and boats please most children. Avoid the steep walks if you have toddlers, and pack warm clothes for evenings.
