Walk from Ghoom to Darjeeling by Batasia

Ride a ₹30–50 shared jeep to Ghoom, then walk 7–8 km back to Darjeeling along Hill Cart Road beside the railway, mostly downhill, stopping at Batasia Loop and the Gorkha War Memorial. Time it right and you will meet the toy train on the way.

This is the cheapest way to see the top of the railway: take a shared jeep up to Ghoom and walk back. The road and the tracks run side by side for most of the way, often only a metre or two apart, and the walk is a gentle descent of around 200 m over 7–8 km. Start at Ghum station, look at the platform and the museum if it is open, and set off towards Darjeeling with the railway as your guide.

After 2–3 km you reach Batasia Loop, the spiral laid out in 1919 so that trains could lose height without a steep gradient. The loop is now a small ticketed garden, about ₹20–50 to enter, with the Gorkha War Memorial at its centre. The memorial honours Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army who died in service after independence, many of them from these hills. On a clear morning Kanchenjunga stands straight behind it, and if a joyride is due you can watch it circle the loop.

From Batasia the road continues down through the outskirts of town to Darjeeling station, about an hour more. Walk facing the traffic where there is no footpath, and step well clear when you hear a train whistle: the trains have right of way and pass very close. Carry water and a jacket, because mist can come in quickly on this ridge. If your legs tire, flag down any jeep heading into Darjeeling for a few tens of rupees.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How far is it to walk from Ghoom to Darjeeling?

About 7–8 km along Hill Cart Road, mostly downhill, which takes most people two to two and a half hours with a stop at Batasia Loop. The road follows the railway, so it is easy to find your way. The uphill direction takes longer, which is why we suggest riding up to Ghoom by shared jeep for ₹30–50 and walking down.

Is it safe to walk along the toy train route?

Walk on the road, not on the tracks, and keep to the side facing traffic where there is no footpath. Trains and jeeps both pass close, and the trains cannot stop quickly, so step well aside when you hear a whistle. The walk is used by locals every day and is generally safe in daylight; avoid it in thick mist or after dark.

What is the Gorkha War Memorial at Batasia Loop?

It stands in the middle of Batasia Loop and honours Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army who died in service after independence; many came from these hills. The memorial is inside the ticketed Batasia garden, about ₹20–50 to enter. Visitors are expected to be respectful: no climbing on the memorial and no playful poses on it for photographs.
