A day circuit to Takdah and Tinchuley

From Lamahatta, drive on to Takdah's old cantonment bungalows and government orchid centre, then to Tinchuley's three hilltops and Gumbadara viewpoint over the Teesta valley. A gentle day of villages, tea and views, back in time for supper.

Lamahatta makes a good first base for a three-village circuit. A short drive on, Takdah was a British army cantonment in the early 1900s, and several of the old officers' bungalows still stand among the trees, some now run as heritage homestays. The government orchid centre at Takdah grows hill orchids in its nursery; February to April is the best time to see them in flower. Walk the lanes between the bungalows and look at the old stone and timber work.

Tinchuley, about 3 km from Takdah at roughly 1,770 m, takes its name, by the common local explanation, from three hilltops that look like clay ovens: tin, three, and chulha, an oven. It is a village of homestays, orange orchards and tea. Gumbadara viewpoint looks over the Teesta valley and, on clear days, to Kanchenjunga. Nearby is the Rungli Rungliot tea garden, whose name, the local story says, means 'thus far and no further'.

A reserved car for the day costs ₹2,500–4,000 from Darjeeling, and often less if your homestay arranges a local car from Lamahatta. Roads are narrow and steep, and in the monsoon landslides can close stretches for hours, so check current status before you travel. Homestays and small shops in Takdah and Tinchuley will usually serve tea and simple food, and some tea gardens sell their own tea. Aim to be back in Lamahatta before the afternoon mist.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How far are Takdah and Tinchuley from Lamahatta?

Both are a short drive further along the hill roads beyond Lamahatta: Takdah is about 28 km from Darjeeling and Tinchuley about 3 km beyond it, against Lamahatta's 23 km. Allow 5–6 hours for an unhurried circuit with stops at the orchid centre, the old bungalows and Gumbadara viewpoint, and return before the afternoon mist.

When do the orchids flower at Takdah?

The government orchid centre at Takdah is at its best from February to April, when many of its hill orchids flower. Outside those months you will see the plants but fewer blooms. Opening days and visitor arrangements change, so ask your homestay or check current status before you travel, especially on Sundays and holidays.

Can I stay in Takdah or Tinchuley instead?

Yes. Both villages have homestays, and in Takdah some old cantonment bungalows are run as heritage homestays; the simpler village houses charge about ₹1,500–2,500 a person with meals. Many travellers spend one night in Lamahatta and one in Tinchuley or Takdah. Book ahead for October and the spring months, when these small villages fill quickly.
