Santalabari is the end of the road, with a forest check gate, a few shops and porters waiting for walkers. From there the old path rises through mixed forest, paved in places with stones laid long ago, and crosses small streams. It gains a few hundred metres over 5 km, so the pace is easy; most people take two to three hours with stops.

At the top you reach Buxa village, a spread of homes, tea shops and homestays on a ridge, and a short walk on are the fort's stone ruins and the memorial. Plaques recall the detention camp of the 1930s and the revolutionaries held here, and Tagore's 1931 poem for them. Little of the Tibetan years remains visible, but ask in the village; older residents may remember stories.

Carry water, a snack and a rain layer. In the dry season the path is easy underfoot; after rain it is slippery, with leeches. Forest rules apply: stay on the path, do not leave litter and keep noise down.

Cost: Forest fees about ₹100–300; porter ₹500–800 (indicative)

Questions people ask

Good to know

How difficult is the Buxa Fort walk?

Easy to moderate. It is about 5 km on a stone path with a steady climb to around 850 m, two to three hours up for most walkers. Children used to walking and fit older people manage it slowly. Good shoes and water are enough; no technical skill is needed.

Do I need a guide for the Buxa walk?

The path is clear and many walk it without a guide, but a local guide or porter adds safety, stories and help with bags for about ₹500–800. Forest rules sometimes require guides for routes beyond the village; check at the gate.

Can we do the Buxa Fort walk as a day trip?

Yes, from Rajabhatkhawa, Jayanti or Alipurduar with an early start: drive to Santalabari, walk up in the morning, see the fort and walk down in the afternoon. A night at the top is much better, with sunset, dawn and Lepchakha.
