The Mahakal cave walk up the riverbed

From Jayanti a long walk follows the Jayanti riverbed into the hills and then climbs to Mahakal, a limestone cave whose stalactites are worshipped as Shiva. It is a full day, best in the dry months with a local guide.

The walk begins at the village and heads upstream along the wide riverbed, crossing channels of clear water on stones. The hills close in, forest rises on both sides and the bed narrows. Distances given locally vary, commonly about 5–6 km each way, because the riverbed shifts after every monsoon. The last part leaves the river and climbs steeply to the cave.

Inside, water dripping through limestone has built stalactites and stalagmites, which pilgrims revere as forms of Mahakal, Shiva. There may be priests, offerings and bells; remove shoes where asked, keep your voice low and follow local practice. At Maha Shivaratri in February or March the path is crowded with pilgrims and stalls appear in the village.

The route is inside Buxa Tiger Reserve and near the Bhutan border. Rules on entry and guides change, so ask at the Jayanti or Rajabhatkhawa forest office and check current status before you travel. Start by 7 am, carry water and food, and be back before dusk.

Cost: Guide ₹600–1,000; forest fees if applicable
