A night at Kalipur in the Gorumara forest
Kalipur is a tiny forest corporation camp in the Gorumara forest, run with the forest village nearby. With only a few cottages and no highway, it gives you a real forest night, with a watchtower close by and the sounds of the jungle at dark.

The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation runs a handful of small community-linked camps around Gorumara, and Kalipur is one of the most remote. It has only a few cottages, so it is quiet by design. Villagers from the forest settlement help run the camp, and meals, an attendant and, on some evenings, a local dance programme are charged separately on the corporation's tariff.
After dark you hear the forest: barking deer alarm calls, owls, perhaps elephants moving in the distance. Mornings start with birds around the clearing. Staff will be strict about not walking out of the compound at night, and they are right: wild elephants and gaur pass close.
Book on the corporation's website well in advance. Access is by car from the Lataguri side, and the last stretch is forest road. Check current status before you travel, since camps close in the monsoon and for repairs after floods.
Cost: About ₹2,000 a cottage + ₹500 pp meals (indicative)
Questions people ask
Good to know
How do I book Kalipur eco village?
Through the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation's website, which lists Kalipur alongside its other camps around Gorumara. Recent tariffs were about ₹2,000 a cottage with meals at around ₹500 per person a day. There are only a few cottages, so book early for winter weekends.
Is Kalipur better than staying in Lataguri?
For quiet and atmosphere, yes; you are in the forest, away from highway trucks. For convenience, Lataguri wins, with more food choices, shops and easier safari logistics. Many visitors split two nights: one in Lataguri for the counters and one at Kalipur or Dhupjhora.
Is there electricity and mobile signal at Kalipur?
Expect basic power, sometimes with backup for limited hours, and weak or patchy mobile signal depending on the network. Charge devices when you can, carry a torch and a power bank, and tell family you may be out of contact overnight.
