Walking the rhododendron stretch in spring

In spring the forest above Padamchen flowers in red, pink and white. Walk a few kilometres of the Silk Route road uphill through the blooms and have your car pick you up further on. Easy walking, good light before cloud, and very few people.

From March to May the road between Padamchen and Zuluk passes through some of the best rhododendron forest on the Silk Route. The flowering starts lower down in March with the tree rhododendrons and moves uphill through April and May, so at any point in the season there is usually a band of colour somewhere on the climb. The red blooms of the tree rhododendron are the most common; pinks and creams appear higher up.

The simplest plan is to start walking uphill from the village after breakfast and ask your driver to follow an hour later and collect you wherever you have reached. The road is paved, the gradient is steady rather than steep, and 4–6 km takes most people two to three hours with stops. Morning is better than afternoon, because cloud often rises from the valley by midday and the light goes flat.

Carry water, a rain shell and a snack. Walk on the hill side, in single file, and step aside for vehicles. Do not pick flowers or break branches; the forest is within a wildlife sanctuary and local families take its protection seriously. Some years the flowering is thin or late after a cold winter, so treat any guarantee from an agent with care, and check current status of the road before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

When do rhododendrons bloom around Padamchen?

Usually from late March to May, starting lower down and moving uphill as spring advances. Mid-April is often the best time around Padamchen and Zuluk, with flowers higher up into May. The timing shifts with the weather each year, so ask your homestay a week or two before you travel.

Is it safe to walk on the Silk Route road?

Yes, for short stretches by day, if you are careful. Walk in single file on the hill side, step well off the road for army trucks and cars, and avoid walking in fog or after dark. Do not walk close to the outer edge, which can be unstable after rain.

How long is the walk from Padamchen to Zuluk?

Zuluk is roughly 12–15 km up the road from Padamchen, with a big climb of about 900 m. Few people walk all of it. We suggest walking 4–6 km through the best forest and letting your car pick you up for the rest of the climb.
