Getting your Silk Route permit at Rongli

The practical heart of any Silk Route trip: handing in your documents at Rongli and getting the permit that lets you go up to Padamchen, Zuluk, Gnathang and Kupup. Done well, it takes an hour. Done badly, it costs you half a day.

Indian nationals heading up the Silk Route need a permit for the restricted stretch above Rongli. In practice most travellers never queue themselves: the driver, the homestay or a Gangtok agent collects copies of photo ID and passport photos in advance and applies for named dates and places. The permit is issued at Rongli, and checked again at points on the road beyond. Rules and offices have shifted over the years, so treat this as the usual pattern, not a promise, and check current status before you travel.

If you are doing it yourself, arrive in Rongli on a weekday morning with your documents ready. Bring the originals and at least four copies of each person's ID, four passport photos, and a clear list of where you will sleep each night. Children need ID too. Offices can close on Sundays and government holidays, and in peak season there may be a line. Applying a day ahead through your homestay avoids most of that.

Use the waiting time well. Buy water, snacks and a warm hat if you forgot one, eat a proper meal in the bazaar, and use the toilet. Make a few spare copies at a photocopy shop in case a checkpoint keeps one. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit for Sikkim and a separate arrangement through a registered agent, and access for them to the Silk Route has varied, so ask well ahead.
