Orchid and cactus nurseries of Kalimpong
Kalimpong has grown and sold plants for generations: around 300 orchid species grow in these hills, and the town's nurseries ship orchids, gladioli and cacti across India. Visit two or three for a gentle half day.

Kalimpong's mild climate, at about 1,250 m, suits plants that would sulk in Darjeeling's cold. Around 300 species of orchid grow in the hills around the town, and families here have been growing and selling plants for decades: orchids, gladioli bulbs, amaryllis and, more surprisingly, cacti and succulents. Nurseries are spread around the town, some on the main roads and some down lanes.
Pine View Nursery is known for its cactus collection, rows of greenhouses full of spines from the other side of the world, a strange sight in a monsoon town. Family nurseries below town, such as the one around Holumba Haven guesthouse, grow orchids that flower mainly from March to May, with some species in autumn. Ask before you walk into private greenhouses, and do not touch the plants.
Combine nurseries with a quiet walk: many sit on the lower roads towards Siliguri or on the Rinkingpong side. A half-day taxi costs about ₹1,500–2,000. If you buy plants, ask about carrying them home; orchids travel badly in hot trains and some cannot be taken on flights.
Cost: ₹20–100 entry at some nurseries
Questions people ask
Good to know
When do orchids flower in Kalimpong?
Most orchids flower between March and May, with a smaller show in October and November. Nurseries have something in bloom much of the year, because they grow many species. For wild orchids on trees, look in the forests around Lava and Lolegaon in spring.
Is Pine View Nursery worth visiting?
Yes, if you like plants. It is known for a large cactus collection in greenhouses, unusual for a rainy hill town. Allow about an hour. There is usually a small entry fee. Opening hours vary with the season, so check current status before you travel.
Can I buy orchids in Kalimpong and take them home?
You can buy plants and bulbs, and nurseries often pack them for travel. Orchids do not like heat, so long, hot train journeys can harm them. Ask the nursery about airline rules and plant care. Carrying plants abroad usually needs phytosanitary papers, so ask before buying.
