The river town after the 2023 flood
Walk the main street of Teesta Bazar, sit for tea by the road and see how a river town lives with the Teesta after the flood of October 2023. A quiet, respectful hour that explains much about these valleys.

Teesta Bazar has always lived off the road and the river: jeep drivers' tea stops, grocers for the villages above, rafting offices and dhabas. On the night of 3–4 October 2023 the flood that began at South Lhonak lake in North Sikkim reached here within hours. Water and silt filled the lower market and houses near the bank, and long stretches of NH10 were buried or washed away.
Walk the street in the late afternoon, when the light is soft and shops are open. You will see new walls, raised plinths and in places the old ground level metres below today's sand. People here are generally happy to talk about the flood if you ask kindly, over tea, rather than as a spectacle. Do not photograph damaged homes or people without asking.
This walk is not a sight in the usual sense, and we include it because it explains the road warnings you will see across this site. NH10 has closed many times since 2023, and both the Teesta valley roads and the North Sikkim road above Chungthang have had long closures. Spend a little money in the bazaar: a meal, tea, a packet of local snacks. Check current status before you travel.
Cost: ₹50–150 for tea and snacks
Questions people ask
Good to know
Was Teesta Bazar damaged in the 2023 flood?
Yes. The flood of 3–4 October 2023, from the South Lhonak lake outburst in North Sikkim, flooded the lower market and riverside houses at Teesta Bazar and buried or washed away stretches of NH10. Rebuilding has continued since, and further monsoon slides have cut the road again.
Is it safe to visit Teesta Bazar now?
In the dry season, from about October to May, travellers pass through and stop safely. Stay away from the riverbank, follow local advice, and avoid the monsoon months, when slides and high water are most likely. Check current status before you travel.
Why does NH10 keep closing?
The 2023 flood raised the Teesta's bed with sand and boulders and undercut the road in many places. Monsoon rain then triggers slides and erosion on the weakened slopes. Repairs take time, so closures from June to September are common. Check current status before you travel.
