Walk the Dow Hill forest road
Walk 5 km from Kurseong bazaar up through the conifer forest to the gates of the old schools. A gentle climb of about 400 m on a quiet road, with moss, ferns and birds all the way.

Leave Kurseong bazaar by 7 am and follow the signs for Dow Hill Road. The first kilometre passes houses, small shops and school buses; then the forest closes in. The tall conifers here were planted and managed by the forest department over the last century, and the road runs under them in long bends, rarely steep, rarely busy.
Keep an eye on the trees for laughingthrushes, minivets and drongos, and on the cuttings for ferns and small orchids in spring. In the dry months the light comes through the trunks at a low angle until about 9 am, which is the best time for photographs.
At the top you reach the gates of Victoria Boys' School and then Dow Hill School. Turn back here for a half-day, or walk on to Chimney, about 1.5–2 hours further.
Cost: Free · ₹400–600 for a car back
Questions people ask
Good to know
How difficult is the Dow Hill walk?
It is an easy to moderate road walk of about 5 km with roughly 400 m of climb. Most people take 1–1.5 hours up with stops. Wear proper shoes, carry water and a light jacket, and avoid the forest stretches after dark.
Can I walk from Dow Hill to Chimney?
Yes. The road continues over the ridge from the schools to Chimney village, about 1.5–2 hours more on foot. From Chimney you can take a local jeep or a booked taxi back to Kurseong, or carry on to Bagora.
Is the Dow Hill forest safe to walk alone?
In daylight the road is used by locals, school staff and vehicles, and walkers rarely have trouble. It becomes lonely and dark early in winter evenings. Walk in the morning, tell your hotel where you are going, and keep to the road rather than forest paths.
