Dawn trip from Sittong to Ahaldara
Leave Sittong before dawn for the hilltop of Ahaldara above Latpanchar. Watch the sun rise over the Teesta valley and the Kalimpong hills, with Kanchenjunga to the north on clear mornings, and be back for breakfast.
Ahaldara is the open hilltop above Latpanchar, a short drive from Sittong. Cars stop below the top, and you walk the last few hundred metres up a path to the viewing area.
From the top the land drops away to the Teesta valley. On a clear morning you see the river below, the ridges of Kalimpong across it, the plains to the south and, if you are lucky, Kanchenjunga and its neighbours to the north catching the first light.
Book the car the night before through your homestay and confirm the fare. Dress warmly: the hilltop is windy and cold before sunrise from November to February. Stop at Latpanchar for tea and birds on the way back.
Cost: Car ₹1,200–1,800 return
