A rice-and-dal lunch at the fork
Many North Sikkim tours stop for lunch around Chungthang. Small hotels serve rice, dal, a vegetable, pickle and sometimes chicken or eggs for about ₹150–250. It is plain, filling food, and one of the best-value meals of the trip.

On the long drive between Gangtok and Lachen or Lachung, lunch often lands at Chungthang or just before it. The small hotels by the road serve the standard Sikkim highway meal: steamed rice, dal, a seasonal vegetable such as squash, potato or local greens, a pickle, and sometimes eggs or chicken curry.
A plate costs about ₹150–250, with refills of rice and dal usually free. Momos and thukpa are around ₹100–180. Tea is ₹20–40. Ask for local greens if they have them; fern shoots, called ningro, and squash shoots appear in season.
Eat simply here, especially if you are heading for Lachen and a 3 am start for Gurudongmar. Avoid very spicy or oily food before the hairpins. Carry bottled or filtered water, and use the toilet before leaving. Pay in cash; network and card machines are unreliable after the flood.
Cost: ₹150–250
