The day starts with a knock at 2.30 or 3 am. Vehicles leave Lachen in a line, because the army and the Dzumsa prefer convoys and because the morning is the only reliable window: by noon the plateau is usually windy and clouded. Wear everything warm you have and carry the packed breakfast your homestay gives you.

After about 30 km you reach Thangu, at roughly 3,900 m, for tea and toilets. Beyond it the trees end and the road crosses a high, open plateau of brown hills and moraine with snow peaks on all sides. On a clear morning the light comes up behind the hills as you drive. The last stretch climbs to the lake at about 5,180 m.

At the shore, walk slowly to the prayer flags and the water's edge. Twenty to forty minutes is enough for photographs and a quiet moment. Then head down; the descent itself is the cure for any headache. Back in Lachen by 10–11 am, you have breakfast and then drive on to Lachung or back toward Gangtok.
