Birds of the Singhik ridge at first light
After the sunrise, stay on the ridge. The mixed forest and farm edges around Singhik draw common mid-hill birds of Sikkim: bulbuls, flycatchers, sunbirds, minivets and laughingthrushes. Walk slowly with binoculars along the road and village paths.

Singhik sits at about 1,560 m, in the middle band of the Sikkim Himalaya where warm valley forest meets cooler hill forest. The edges between farms, cardamom groves and forest are good for birds, and early morning, just after the Kanchenjunga sunrise, is the most active time.
Walk slowly along the road toward Mangan and on village paths. Typical sightings at this height include bulbuls, drongos, barbets, minivets, sunbirds, flycatchers and laughingthrushes; raptors ride the air over the gorge later in the morning. We do not promise species, but a patient two hours usually turns up a dozen or more.
Bring binoculars and a field guide or app for Indian birds. Stay on the road edge and paths, and do not enter fields or private land. Walk facing traffic. Cardamom groves are damp and have leeches in the wet months; tuck trousers into socks. Return for breakfast by 9 am.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is Singhik good for birdwatching?
It is good for common mid-hill birds of Sikkim, especially in the early morning from October to May. The mix of forest, farms and cardamom groves along the ridge attracts bulbuls, sunbirds, flycatchers, minivets and laughingthrushes. Serious birders may prefer the higher forests of Lachung or Dzongu.
Do I need a guide for birding in Singhik?
Not necessarily. You can walk the road and village paths on your own with binoculars and a field guide. A local guide helps with finding birds and paths, but there are few dedicated bird guides in Singhik; ask your lodge or a Gangtok agency.
Are there leeches around Singhik?
Yes, in damp cardamom groves and forest, especially from May to September. In the dry season they are rare. Tuck trousers into socks, wear closed shoes and check your legs after walking. Salt or a little tobacco removes them.
