Above the treeline from Yumthang
The 23 km road from Yumthang to Zero Point climbs about 1,100 m, from rhododendron forest through dwarf scrub to bare moraine. Ask for two short stops: one at the last of the trees and one where the valley opens out.

This drive is a lesson in how fast the Himalaya changes with height. Leaving Yumthang at about 3,560 m, the road runs through the upper Shingba forest, with fir and rhododendron. Within half an hour the trees shrink to bushes, then give way to grass, moss and rock. By the time you reach Zero Point at about 4,700 m there is little but snow, stone and sky.
Ask the driver for two short stops, at the treeline and where the valley widens. In April and May you may see dwarf rhododendrons flowering low to the ground; in October and November the slopes are russet and the peaks around the valley head are clear in the early light.
The road crosses streams that can be icy in the morning, and some stretches are narrow. Do not push the driver to go faster. Stay seated with a seat belt where available. If you get motion sickness, take your medicine before leaving Lachung and sit in the front if you can.
