Walk the forest trail down to Srikhola
The last long downhill of the Phalut trek runs from Rammam through oak, chestnut and rhododendron forest to the river village of Srikhola, losing about 600 m. A gentle, shady morning walk with birds and the sound of water below.
Leave Rammam after breakfast and follow the path down through fields to the forest edge. The trail then drops steadily through mixed forest: oak, chestnut, rhododendron, magnolia and, in damp spots, ferns and moss. It is wider and better used than the high trails, with village walkers and mules on it.
Occasional gaps in the trees show the valley ahead and the river glinting far below. In spring, rhododendrons flower on this stretch earlier than higher up; in autumn the forest is quiet and cool. Listen for barbets and minivets in the canopy.
After 2.5–3 hours you reach the river and the iron bridge into Srikhola, with its lodges and the first jeeps since Maneybhanjan. If you are continuing the same day, have lunch here before walking or driving on to Rimbik.
