The big descent from Sandakphu via Gurdum
Drop from 3,636 m to about 1,900 m in a single day, from bare summit to warm river valley, through fir, rhododendron, oak and bamboo, passing the small village of Gurdum. The hardest downhill of the trek and the fastest way off the ridge.
Leave Sandakphu after breakfast and the morning view. The trail turns east off the summit and plunges steeply into fir and rhododendron forest. The first few hours are the steepest, on rocky and rooty paths, and in spring this upper forest is full of flowers.
The forest changes as you descend: firs give way to oak, maple and chestnut, then thick bamboo. About two thirds of the way down you reach Gurdum, a small village at about 2,300 m with fields and a few houses, where you can buy tea and rest your legs.
From Gurdum the trail continues down through forest and farmland to the river. You will be tired, especially in the knees, when you reach the bridge at Srikhola. Take your time, use poles and stop often. Plan your day so you arrive in the afternoon light.
