Kanchenjunga sunrise from Tumling

Wake before dawn, wrap up and stand on the lodge terrace as the first light hits Kanchenjunga, about 70–75 km to the north. On clear mornings the whole range turns pink, then gold, then white, while the valleys of Nepal stay under cloud.

Your lodge host will knock or the trekkers next door will wake you around 5 am. Step out in the dark with a torch, a down jacket and a cup of tea if the kitchen is up. The northern sky lightens first behind the Kanchenjunga massif, still grey against blue, while Darjeeling's lights fade to the east.

Then the top of Kanchenjunga catches the sun, a single bright point, and the light spreads down and across: Kabru, Pandim, Simvo and the long spine of peaks that guides call the Sleeping Buddha. In ten minutes the whole range is lit. Below, cloud sits in the valleys like a sea, broken only by the darker ridges of Sikkim.

Stay until the sun reaches you, then walk 10–15 minutes up the trail toward the ridge top if your guide agrees; on the best days Everest and Makalu show far to the west. By 7 am cloud may already be rising. Breakfast, pack, and the ridge is yours.
