Day trek to Maenam Hill above Ravangla
A long, steady climb from Ravangla through the forests of Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary to a summit at about 3,200 m, with views across Sikkim when the sky is clear. Not technical, but a full day that needs a local guide, fitness and an early start.

Maenam Hill rises behind Ravangla to about 3,200 m, and its slopes form the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary. The trail leaves from near the town and climbs through temperate forest of oak, magnolia, rhododendron and dense bamboo, the habitat of red panda, barking deer and many birds, though wildlife is rarely seen on a busy trail. The path is steady rather than technical, but it is long: plan on 4–5 hours up and about 3–4 hours down, with breaks.
Near the top a rock outcrop called Bhaledunga juts from the ridge; the Nepali name is usually explained as rooster rock, after its shape. On a clear morning the summit gives views over large parts of Sikkim, with Kanchenjunga and its neighbours to the north-west and the Rangeet and Teesta valleys falling away below. In spring parts of the trail flower with rhododendrons. In monsoon the path is slippery and full of leeches, and views are rare.
Hire a local guide in Ravangla, about ₹1,500–2,500 for the day, and ask your hotel to arrange it the evening before. The trail passes through a sanctuary, so an entry fee or permit from the forest office may apply; rules change, so check current status before you travel. Start by 6 am, carry 2 litres of water, a packed lunch, a rain jacket and a warm layer, and turn back by early afternoon wherever you are.
Cost: Guide ₹1,500–2,500 plus sanctuary fee
Questions people ask
Good to know
How difficult is the Maenam Hill trek?
Moderate to demanding because of its length rather than any technical section. You climb roughly 1,100 m from Ravangla to about 3,200 m and back in one day, usually 8–9 hours with breaks. Regular walkers manage it; first-time trekkers should be fit and start very early. Children and older travellers are better off with shorter forest walks near town.
Do I need a guide or permit for Maenam Hill?
A local guide is strongly advised because forest trails branch and cloud can roll in quickly; expect about ₹1,500–2,500 for the day. The route lies in Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary, so an entry fee or forest permit may be required. Ask your hotel or the forest office in Ravangla the day before, and check current status before you travel.
What is the best season for the Maenam trek?
October to December gives the clearest views and dry trails. March to May brings rhododendron flowers and warmer days, with more afternoon haze. Avoid June to September, when the trail is slippery, leeches are common and the summit is usually in cloud. In January and February, frost and occasional snow can make the upper trail icy.
