forest bungalow · Suntalekhola
Suntaleykhola Eco-Tourism Centre (WBFDC)
Forest corporation cottages beside the Suntalekhola stream, about 5 km beyond Samsing on the edge of Neora Valley National Park. Reached across a hanging footbridge, which is half the fun and the reason to pack light.
Suntalekhola, the orange stream in Nepali, runs out of the Neora Valley forest into the Murti. The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation's cottages sit on the far bank, and the last few minutes are on foot over a suspension bridge above the water. The corporation also runs a separate river camp nearby with tents.
Expect simple cottages, home-style food and a lot of birdsong. There is no market here; Samsing is the nearest place for shops. Mobile signal is patchy. Book on the corporation's website and check current status before you travel, because the road above Samsing is narrow and monsoon damage is common.
Why we suggest it
- Riverside cottages reached by a footbridge
- On the edge of Neora Valley National Park
- Cheaper than most private resorts in Samsing

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can a car reach the Suntaleykhola cottages?
A car reaches the road end near the bridge, and you walk the last short stretch over the suspension bridge with your bags. Pack in one soft bag if you can. People with limited mobility should ask the corporation about the walk before booking, because there are steps and an uneven path.
How far is Suntalekhola from Siliguri?
Roughly 90 km, about three hours by car via Malbazar, Chalsa, Metali and Samsing. A reserved car costs about ₹3,500–4,500 one way from NJP. Shared jeeps and buses reach Chalsa or Metali, where local jeeps run up to Samsing on a less regular timetable.
Is Suntalekhola open in the monsoon?
The forest corporation's property is not inside a national park, so it may stay open, but the road above Samsing and the stream itself can be risky in heavy rain. We do not recommend June to September. If you go, keep a free day for road closures and check current status before you travel.
