Kalimpong town and Deolo on a shoestring

Two nights in Kalimpong for about ₹5,500 per person: shared jeeps up from Siliguri, a budget room near the market, Deolo hill at 1,704 m, the Durpin monastery that holds the 108 volumes of the Kangyur, the town's oldest gompa from 1692, and Kalimpong cheese and milk lollipops to take home.

Kalimpong has changed hands more often than most hill towns. Explanations of the name differ: a Tibetan reading gives the stockade of the king's ministers, a Lepcha one a hillock of assemblage. The ridge was ruled from Sikkim, then from Bhutan, which is said to have taken it in 1706. After the Duar War of 1864–65, the Treaty of Sinchula handed the land east of the Teesta to the British, and in 1866 Kalimpong joined Darjeeling district. For nearly a century it was India's main market for Tibetan wool, carried by mule over the Jelep La, until the 1962 war closed the pass.

We built this for a Friday-to-Sunday window and a small budget. It runs on shared jeeps, which leave Siliguri when full, half of a budget room near the market, and one half-day car split four ways for Durpin and the nurseries. The town sits at 1,247 m, so nights are milder than in Darjeeling, and most sights lie within 6 km of the motor stand. The one firm rule is the road: NH10 up the Teesta has had repeated closures since October 2023, so keep a few hours spare on the last day and check current status before you travel.

Day01

NJP to Kalimpong by shared jeep

Kalimpong≈ 3–3.5 h by shared jeep from SiliguriOn your own

Take an auto from NJP or Bagdogra to the SNT or Panitanki jeep stands in Siliguri, where a seat to Kalimpong costs ₹200–300 and jeeps leave when full. The usual road runs past the Coronation Bridge at Sevoke, built 1937–41, and follows NH10 up the Teesta to Teesta Bazar. NH10 has had repeated landslide and flood closures since October 2023; when it shuts, jeeps divert via Gajoldoba and Odlabari, the Gorubathan–Lava road or round by Darjeeling and Peshok, so check current status before you travel. Check in near the market at 1,247 m and walk the lanes before dark. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the haat bazaar fills them.

Spend today: ₹200–300 jeep seat + ₹150 momos

Day02

Deolo, Graham's Homes and Durpin

Kalimpong≈ 20 km of town roads by taxi seat and shared carOn your own

After breakfast, walk or take a taxi seat 5–6 km up to Deolo, at 1,704 m the town's highest point, with a Science Centre on top and paragliders launching on clear days. On the way down, stop at Dr Graham's Homes at the foot of the hill. In 1900 the Scottish missionary Rev. Dr John Anderson Graham opened the St Andrew's Colonial Homes here for Anglo-Indian children, beginning with six children in a single cottage. After lunch, share a half-day car to Durpin hill, 1,372 m; locals say the name comes from durbin, Nepali for binoculars. Zang Dhok Palri Phodang on top was established in 1957 by Dudjom Rinpoche and holds the 108 volumes of the Kangyur.

Spend today: ₹600 car share + ₹100 entry fees + ₹450 food

Day03

Thongsa Gompa, cheese and the jeep down

≈ 3–3.5 h by shared jeep to SiliguriOn your own

Walk early to Thongsa Gompa, also called Jangsa Dechen Choling, built by the Bhutanese in 1692 and the oldest monastery in Kalimpong. Back in the market, look for Kalimpong cheese and the hand-rolled milk sweets called Kalimpong lollipops. Both began with Father André Butty, a Swiss Jesuit refused entry to Tibet in the 1950s, who stayed on and set up the Swiss Welfare Dairy. It closed in 1990 when his visa was not renewed, and small makers keep the recipes going today. Catch a shared jeep to Siliguri by about noon. NH10 closures can force diversions via Gajoldoba or Peshok, so check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

Is two nights enough for Kalimpong?

Two nights cover the town well: Deolo hill, Durpin and its monastery, Thongsa Gompa, Dr Graham's Homes and the market. You will not reach Lava, Lolegaon or the Pedong villages, which need two to four nights more. With one extra day, add a night and take a shared jeep to Pedong, 20 km east, for the Damsang fort ruins and the old trade road to the Jelep La.

How much does this Kalimpong weekend cost?

About ₹5,500 per person, twin sharing, from NJP or Bagdogra and back, indicative for 2025–26. That covers shared jeep seats both ways, half of a budget room for two nights, a quarter share of a half-day car, simple meals and entry fees. Budget rooms in town run ₹1,200–2,500, so a solo traveller or anyone wanting a better room pays more.

How do I get from NJP or Bagdogra to Kalimpong?

Take an auto or cab to the SNT or Panitanki jeep stands in Siliguri and buy a shared seat for ₹200–300; the ride takes 3–3.5 hours and jeeps leave when full. A reserved car from NJP or Bagdogra costs ₹3,500–5,000. Jeeps run mostly in daylight, so aim to leave Siliguri by early afternoon. Closures change journey times, so check current status before you travel.

Is NH10 to Kalimpong open?

NH10, the main road up the Teesta from Sevoke to Teesta Bazar and Rangpo, has had repeated landslide and flood closures since the October 2023 Teesta flood. When it shuts, traffic goes via Gajoldoba and Odlabari, the Gorubathan–Lava road (NH717A), or round through Darjeeling and Peshok, each adding time. Ask at the jeep stand or your hotel the day before, and check current status before you travel.

Can I walk up Deolo hill?

Yes. Deolo, at 1,704 m, is about 5–6 km from the town centre, and the road climbs roughly 450 m, so allow 1.5–2 hours up. Many people take a taxi seat up and walk down past Dr Graham's Homes at the foot of the hill. Start early from October to December for the clearest view north; afternoons often cloud over.

How much does paragliding at Deolo cost?

Tandem flights from Deolo cost roughly ₹2,500–4,500, depending on the length of the flight and the season, and are not included in this trip's price. Flights depend on wind and visibility and stop in rain and through the monsoon. Book on the hill with a registered operator rather than through a middleman in town, and check current status before you travel.

When is the best time for a Kalimpong weekend?

October to December gives the clearest views of Kanchenjunga and dry, mild days at 1,247 m. March to May is warmer, with the nurseries in flower. January and February are cool and often clear. From June to September rain and landslides slow every road, NH10 most of all, so views are rare and journeys long. Dashain and Tihar weeks in October–November fill rooms with Bengal holidaymakers.

Where can I stay cheaply in Kalimpong?

Small budget hotels around the market and motor stand charge about ₹1,200–2,500 a room, the range this trip assumes. For a little more, the WBTDC Tashiding Tourist Lodge on Durpin costs about ₹2,500–4,500 a room and the WBFDC Sailabash Eco Tourism Centre about ₹2,500–3,500. Holumba Haven, a family guesthouse in an orchid nursery below town, sits in a similar band.

What should I buy in Kalimpong?

Kalimpong cheese and the milk sweets called Kalimpong lollipops, both from the tradition of Father André Butty's Swiss Welfare Dairy, which closed in 1990. Small makers still sell them in the market. The town is also known for its nurseries, with about 300 orchid species grown around it, and for ginger: Kalimpong and Sikkim together grow about 15% of India's crop.
