Gurudongmar and Yumthang on a shared tour

The classic budget loop: two nights, one seat in a shared vehicle, and both of North Sikkim's big sights. Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake at dawn, then Lachung and Yumthang Valley. About ₹7,000 per person from Gangtok with permits, rooms and two meals a day. Fast, high and tiring; check current status before you travel.

This is the trip most Indian travellers mean when they say North Sikkim. A Gangtok agent sells you a seat in a jeep of 8–10 people, sorts your permit, and books simple rooms in Lachen and Lachung with dinner and breakfast. You do not choose your companions, your hotel or your stops, but you pay a fraction of a private vehicle and see Gurudongmar and Yumthang in three days.

Be honest with yourself about the pace. Day one is 6–8 hours of road. Day two starts at 3 am, climbs to about 5,180 m, then drives on to Lachung. Day three is Yumthang and the long ride back. It suits fit adults and students. Families with small children or older parents should choose a slower trip with a night at Singhik or two in Lachen.

Why this trip

  • Gurudongmar Lake at about 5,180 m in the clear dawn light
  • Yumthang Valley and the Shingba rhododendron forest
  • Two Dzumsa villages, Lachen and Lachung, in one trip
  • The Teesta confluence at Chungthang
  • The lowest per-person price for North Sikkim

Questions people ask

Questions about this trip

How much does a shared North Sikkim tour cost?

About ₹5,500–6,500 per person for the 3-day, 2-night Lachen and Lachung loop from Gangtok in 2025–26, including permits, a seat, rooms and dinner and breakfast. With lunches, snacks and rentals, budget about ₹7,000. Prices rise in May, October and the Christmas–New Year weeks.

Is 2 nights enough for Gurudongmar and Yumthang?

It is enough to see both, which is why it is the standard tour, but it is rushed and hard on the body. You climb to about 5,180 m on the morning after arriving. If anyone is older, very young or prone to altitude sickness, choose a 3- or 4-night version with two nights in Lachen.

How do I book a shared North Sikkim tour?

Visit registered travel agents around MG Marg in Gangtok, compare prices and book a day ahead. Give them a photocopy of a photo ID and two passport photos for the permit. Get the itinerary, hotel names and what is included in writing, and keep the agent's phone number.

Who will I share the vehicle with?

Other travellers who booked the same tour with the same or partner agents, usually 8–10 people in a Tata Sumo, Bolero or Mahindra Maxx. Groups are often families and friends from across India. Seats are usually assigned, so ask for a window seat if you get motion sickness.

What if the road to Lachen is closed?

Agents usually switch you to a Lachung-only trip, delay departure or offer a partial refund. Terms vary, so ask before paying. Since the 2023 flood, the Lachen road has had more closures than the Lachung side. Check current status before you travel.

Are the hotels on shared tours comfortable?

They are simple: a double or twin room with thick quilts, an attached bathroom and hot water by geyser or bucket. Heating is not guaranteed. Food is basic home-style. If comfort matters, ask the agent about upgrading to a named hotel for an extra fee.

What should I pack for this trip?

Thermal inners, a fleece, a down jacket, warm cap and gloves, woollen socks, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, a torch, a water bottle, basic medicines including for headaches and motion sickness, cash for the whole trip and several ID copies. Leave big suitcases in Gangtok.

Can I do this trip in winter?

Yes, from December to February, but snow can close the roads to Gurudongmar and above Lachung for days, and nights fall to −10 °C. Shared tours run with fewer people, so you may wait for a full vehicle. Keep flexible dates and check current status before you travel.

Is there an age limit for Gurudongmar?

There is no formal age limit, but children under five, pregnant women and people with heart or lung disease are generally advised not to go to the lake. People over 60 should consult a doctor. Anyone can stay in Lachen that morning; the vehicle returns for breakfast.
