Karam Puja in the tea gardens

Karam is the harvest and kinship festival of the Oraon, Munda and other Adivasi families whose ancestors came to the Dooars tea gardens from Chota Nagpur. Branches of the karam tree are planted, songs are sung through the night and the garden lines dance.

When the Dooars tea gardens opened from the 1870s, planters recruited workers from Chota Nagpur and the central Indian hills, and their descendants still form a large part of the garden communities between Malbazar, Birpara and Alipurduar. They brought Karam with them. The festival honours the karam tree, a symbol of fortune and family, and is kept on the eleventh day of the bright half of Bhadra.

Young women fast, branches of the tree are set up in the courtyard or the open ground of the garden lines, and an elder tells the story of Karma and Dharma. Then the drums (mandar and dhol) start and the dancing goes on late into the night. In many gardens around Madarihat and Birpara the whole labour line joins in.

This is a community festival, not a tourist event. If a host family or garden staff invites you, go, sit where you are told, ask before photographing, and accept whatever is offered. Parks are closed in this season, so a Karam visit pairs with a rainy-season stay in a tea garden homestay.

Tips

  • Go only with an invitation from a family or someone who lives in the garden lines.
  • Ask before taking any photograph, and never use flash during the rituals.
  • Monsoon roads are slippery; travel in daylight and keep spare days.

Most hill festivals follow lunar calendars, so dates move each year. Check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

When is Karam Puja celebrated in the Dooars?

Karam falls on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Bhadra, which lands in August or September. Celebrations in the tea gardens often spread across the evening and night, sometimes longer. Dates shift each year with the lunar calendar, so ask a local contact for the exact day before you plan.

Can tourists attend Karam in a tea garden?

Only as guests. Karam is held in family courtyards and the garden lines, not on a stage. Travellers who stay in a garden homestay or have a local friend are often welcomed. Turn up with an invitation, follow your host's lead, and do not wander into garden lines alone at night.

Why is Karam celebrated in the Dooars tea gardens?

Many garden workers' families descend from people recruited from Chota Nagpur, in present-day Jharkhand and nearby areas, after the gardens opened from 1874. They kept their language, songs and festivals, and Karam remains one of the most important. It is a festival of the soil, siblings and good fortune.

Is August a good time to visit the Dooars?

For wildlife, no: Jaldapara, Gorumara and the other parks close from about mid-June to mid-September. For green tea gardens, low prices, Karam and Jhulan festivities, it can be rewarding if you accept rain, leeches and road delays. Check current status before you travel.
