Getting to Kalimpong: NJP, Bagdogra and NH10

Most travellers reach Kalimpong from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station or Bagdogra airport, about 70–80 km away. A shared jeep from Siliguri costs ₹200–300 a seat and takes 3–3.5 hours on NH10; a reserved car costs ₹3,500–5,000. NH10 has had repeated closures since October 2023, so check current status before you travel.

In briefMost travellers reach Kalimpong from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station or Bagdogra airport, about 70–80 km away. A shared jeep from Siliguri costs ₹200–300 a seat and takes 3–3.5 hours on NH10; a reserved car costs ₹3,500–5,000. NH10 has had repeated closures since October 2023, so check current status before you travel.

The short answer

Kalimpong has no railway or airport of its own. The gateways are New Jalpaiguri (NJP), the main railway station for the hills, and Bagdogra airport, both on the edge of Siliguri. From either, you can take a reserved car straight to Kalimpong for ₹3,500–5,000, or go into Siliguri and take a shared jeep for ₹200–300 a seat. On a normal day the drive takes 3–3.5 hours along NH10 through Sevoke and up the Teesta valley.

The catch is the road. NH10 between Sevoke and Teesta Bazar has had repeated landslide and flood closures since the October 2023 Teesta flood, including a slide near the Coronation Bridge at Sevoke in June 2026. When it is shut, traffic goes round by longer diversions that can add two hours or more. Road status changes by the day, so check current status before you travel, and do not plan a tight connection on the way down.

From NJP and Bagdogra to the jeep stands

Trains from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other cities stop at NJP. Outside the station, drivers offer reserved cars to Kalimpong; agree the fare before you load your bags, and ask which route the driver plans to take that day. If you are travelling alone or as a pair, it is cheaper to take an auto or shared toto into Siliguri, a few kilometres away, and find a shared jeep there.

Bagdogra airport is about 15 km west of Siliguri. There is a prepaid taxi counter inside the terminal, and reserved cars to Kalimpong cost about the same as from NJP. For shared jeeps, take a cab or auto into Siliguri first.

In Siliguri, Kalimpong jeeps leave from two main stands: the SNT stand, beside the Sikkim Nationalised Transport bus terminus, and the Panitanki jeep stand. Jeeps leave when full, most often between early morning and early afternoon. Buy your seat at the counter or from the line manager, and keep the slip. State buses also run from Siliguri to Kalimpong; they are slower and a little cheaper than jeeps.

Shared jeep or reserved car

A shared jeep seat is the cheapest way up by a wide margin, and it is how most people who live here travel. A jeep takes about ten passengers, so expect a squeeze, and luggage goes on the roof under a tarpaulin. A reserved car makes sense for families, groups of three or four, anyone carrying a lot, or late arrivals who would miss the last shared jeeps. These fares are indicative for 2025–26 and rise on diversion days.

NH10 and the closures since October 2023

NH10 runs from Sevoke, on the edge of the plains, up the Teesta valley through Teesta Bazar to Rangpo and Sikkim. Kalimpong sits 16 km above it, up a branch road from Teesta Bazar. For decades this was the only road most travellers knew. Since the October 2023 Teesta flood, caused by the outburst of South Lhonak lake in North Sikkim, the river has eaten into the highway in many places, and landslides in the monsoon have closed it again and again.

Closures can last a few hours, a few days or longer, and the authorities sometimes allow only light vehicles or one-way traffic. Drivers in Siliguri and Kalimpong know the day's status before anyone else; ask at the jeep stand or your homestay the evening before. Local news and police notices are the other good source. Whatever you read here, check current status before you travel.

The Coronation Bridge at Sevoke, built between 1937 and 1941 and named for the coronation of George VI, marks where the hill road leaves the plains. If traffic is backed up there in the morning, it is usually a sign that something is wrong further up the valley.

The diversions when NH10 is shut

When NH10 is closed, three diversions keep Kalimpong connected. Each is longer and slower, and shared jeep fares go up to match.

  • East through the plains and up via Lava: from Siliguri across Gajoldoba or via Odlabari into the Dooars, then up through Gorubathan to Lava on NH717A, the newer Bagrakote–Lava–Pedong alternative road, and on to Kalimpong via Algarah. A pleasant forest drive, but it can add two hours or more.
  • Via Darjeeling and Peshok: up the hill road to Darjeeling, then down through Peshok to the Teesta and up to Kalimpong. Useful if the lower stretch near Sevoke is the problem; slow, with steep bends.
  • From Sikkim: travellers coming from Gangtok can sometimes use the back road via Rhenock and Pedong instead of the NH10 stretch through Rangpo and Teesta Bazar. Ask locally whether it is open and suitable for your vehicle.
  • On any diversion day, start early, carry water and snacks, and expect fares to rise; check current status before you travel.

From Gangtok and Darjeeling

From Gangtok, Kalimpong is about 75 km by NH10, down through Rangpo and Melli to Teesta Bazar and up the branch road, normally 3–3.5 hours. Shared jeeps leave from Gangtok's jeep stands through the morning for about ₹250–350 a seat, and a reserved car costs ₹3,500–4,500. Foreign nationals leaving Sikkim should keep their permit papers handy at the checkpost.

From Darjeeling, the road drops through Peshok to the Teesta near the confluence with the Rangeet, then climbs to Kalimpong, about 50 km in 2.5–3 hours. Shared jeeps run from Darjeeling's motor stand, mostly in the morning, for about ₹200–300 a seat; a reserved car costs ₹3,000–4,000. On the way you pass the viewpoint above the Teesta and Rangeet confluence, which Lepcha folklore calls the place where the two river lovers met.

Onward to Lava, Pedong and Lolegaon

Kalimpong's motor stand, in the middle of town, is the hub for the villages. Shared jeeps to Pedong (₹80–120, about 20 km) run several times a day, and from Pedong a short reserved drive takes you up to Sillery Gaon. Jeeps to Lava (₹120–180) are fewer and leave mostly in the morning, so be at the stand early. Lolegaon and Charkhole have only occasional shared jeeps, and most visitors reserve a car.

For a village circuit, it often pays to reserve one car for the whole route. Kalimpong to Lava costs ₹2,500–3,000 one way, and Lava to Lolegaon ₹1,800–2,500. Rishyap is about 10 km by road from Lava, or a 4 km uphill forest walk. Kolakham is 8 km from Lava. Homestay hosts in all these villages can arrange a car for your onward leg if you ask a day ahead.

Tips for the road

A few habits make the journey easier, especially in the monsoon and on closure days.

  • Travel in the morning. Jeeps are more frequent, roads are drier and you arrive before dark.
  • Keep a buffer day before a flight or train out of Bagdogra or NJP.
  • Sit on the left going up from Sevoke for views of the Teesta, and take the front seat, at the price of two, if winding roads make you ill.
  • Carry motion-sickness tablets if you need them; the roads above Teesta Bazar and Algarah wind constantly.
  • If you arrive at NJP or Bagdogra after about 2 pm, a reserved car or a night in Siliguri is safer than waiting for a last shared jeep that may not fill.
  • Keep small notes for jeep fares and tea stops; not every stand takes UPI.
  • Ask your homestay the evening before about road status, and check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How do I get from NJP to Kalimpong?

Take a reserved car from outside NJP station for about ₹3,500–5,000, or go into Siliguri by auto or toto and take a shared jeep from the SNT or Panitanki stand for ₹200–300 a seat. On a normal day the drive takes 3–3.5 hours via Sevoke and Teesta Bazar on NH10. Fares are indicative; check current status before you travel.

How far is Kalimpong from Bagdogra airport?

Kalimpong is roughly 80 km from Bagdogra airport, about 3–3.5 hours by car when NH10 is open. A reserved car from the airport costs about ₹3,500–5,000. For a cheaper ride, take a cab or auto into Siliguri and a shared jeep from there for ₹200–300 a seat. Diversions during NH10 closures add time and cost.

What is the shared jeep fare from Siliguri to Kalimpong?

A shared jeep seat from Siliguri to Kalimpong costs about ₹200–300 on a normal day. Jeeps leave from the SNT stand and the Panitanki jeep stand when full, mostly from early morning to early afternoon, and take 3–3.5 hours. Fares rise when jeeps must take a diversion around NH10 closures, so check current status before you travel.

Is NH10 open to Kalimpong now?

NH10 opens and closes often. Since the October 2023 Teesta flood it has had repeated landslide and flood closures between Sevoke and Teesta Bazar, including a slide near the Coronation Bridge in June 2026. Ask drivers at the Siliguri jeep stands or your Kalimpong host the evening before, follow local police notices, and check current status before you travel.

How do I reach Kalimpong if NH10 is closed?

Use a diversion. The most common runs from Siliguri east via Gajoldoba or Odlabari, then up through Gorubathan to Lava on NH717A and on to Kalimpong. Another goes up to Darjeeling and down through Peshok to the Teesta. Both add two hours or more, and fares rise to match. Check current status before you travel.

How do I get from Gangtok to Kalimpong?

Kalimpong is about 75 km from Gangtok by NH10 via Rangpo, Melli and Teesta Bazar, normally 3–3.5 hours. Shared jeeps leave Gangtok through the morning for about ₹250–350 a seat; a reserved car costs ₹3,500–4,500. Fares are indicative for 2025–26.

How do I get from Kalimpong to Lava?

Shared jeeps to Lava leave from Kalimpong's motor stand for ₹120–180 a seat, but there are only a few, mostly in the morning. The 32 km drive via Algarah takes about 1.5 hours. A reserved car costs ₹2,500–3,000 one way, and four people sharing it pay less than ₹800 each. From Lava, Rishyap and Kolakham are short onward drives.

Do I need a permit to visit Kalimpong?

No. Kalimpong is in West Bengal, and Indian and foreign visitors need no permit to visit the town or its villages. Neora Valley National Park needs a forest entry permit and a local guide, arranged at Lava. If you continue into Sikkim, foreign nationals need a Sikkim permit, and rules change, so check current status before you travel.
