In briefThe best months for North Sikkim are March to May and October to November. March brings snow, late April and May the Yumthang rhododendrons, October and November the clearest skies. June to August is landslide season. Winter is cold but possible. Roads have closed often since 2023, so check current status before you travel.

The short answer

If you can choose any time, go in the second half of October or in early November. The monsoon has cleared, Kanchenjunga stands out from Singhik, Gurudongmar's water is still open, and the maples and larches around Lachung turn red and gold. If snow and flowers matter more than views, go from late March to mid-May, when Yumthang moves from snowfield to rhododendron valley in about six weeks.

The months we do not plan trips for are June, July and August. The road from Gangtok to Mangan and on to Chungthang runs along the Teesta gorge through some of the most landslide-prone ground in the Himalaya, and the monsoon closes it again and again. Since the October 2023 Teesta flood, that has become even more true. Whatever month you pick, check current status before you travel.

For Dzongu and the lower villages the calendar is simpler: October to April is good, and the monsoon months are wet and full of leeches.

The year at a glance

This table is for the high valleys, Lachung and Lachen and the points above them. Mangan, Singhik, Phodong and Dzongu, at 950–2,000 m, are milder in winter and good from October right through April.

Spring: snow, then rhododendrons

March is when most Indian families first see real snow here. Yumthang usually reopens as the road clears, the valley floor is still white, and Zero Point at Yumesamdong is deep in snow. The Gurudongmar road resumes as the snow eases, though the lake itself stays frozen. Holi week and school holidays bring a rush from the plains, so book early.

April is the turning point. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary around Yumthang flowers from the lower slopes upward, while Zero Point stays white above. By May the valley is red, pink and cream with rhododendrons, primulas follow, and Gurudongmar starts to thaw from the middle of the month. May is also peak season for Indian tourists, and Lachung rooms are tight; book at least two weeks ahead. Pre-monsoon storms begin late in May, and with them the first slips on the Teesta road.

In April, once every three years, Tholung Monastery in Dzongu brings out its relics for the Kamsel. If your dates match a Kamsel year, add two nights in a Lepcha homestay.

Monsoon: why we stay away

From June to August the monsoon soaks the Teesta valley. Landslides close the road for hours, days and sometimes weeks, and travellers have been stranded in Lachung and Lachen more than once, most recently in the monsoons of 2024 and 2025. The authorities suspend permits at short notice. Tours sometimes still run on clear weeks, and the alpine meadows of Yumthang and Chopta are at their greenest, with yaks up on the high pastures.

If you are in Sikkim in these months, stay closer to Gangtok: Kabi Lungchok, Phodong and Labrang monasteries, and perhaps Mangan for the start of the large cardamom harvest in late August. If you must go higher, keep two buffer days, buy travel insurance that covers delays, and watch the Mangan district administration's notices.

The flood of October 2023 also changed how the seasons behave on the ground. Long stretches of the road to Chungthang and Lachen now run over fresh debris and temporary diversions, which give way more easily in heavy rain. That is why closures that once lasted hours can now last days. NH10 between Siliguri and Gangtok has had the same problem. Treat the monsoon as a closed season for planning and check current status before you travel.

Autumn: the clearest weeks

September is the hinge. Rain thins through the month, the valleys are lush, and rooms are cheaper than in October. Remember that the 2023 flood came at the very start of October after days of extreme rain, so watch the forecast and keep dates flexible.

October is the best all-round month. Skies are clear and dry, Gurudongmar's water is still open and blue, and autumn colour starts in Lachung's valley. Durga Puja and Diwali bring a wave of families from Bengal and the rest of India, and shared tours and rooms fill for those weeks. November is colder and quieter: colour peaks in early November, the lake begins to freeze, and rooms go back to normal rates. Carry a down jacket for the 4 am Gurudongmar start, when it is well below freezing.

Winter: snow in the village

December to February is cold but not closed. The first heavy snow usually reaches Lachung in December or January, and when the road holds you get blue skies and snow right up to the houses. Gurudongmar and Zero Point open and close with each snowfall, and you may lose a day or a point. Losar, the Tibetan New Year, falls in February or early March and is kept in the Bhutia villages. In December, before Losoong, the masked chaam dance is held at Phodong Monastery.

Winter trips need a heater or a bukhari stove in the room, thermal layers, and a little patience. Shared tours run with fewer people, so you may wait a day for a full vehicle. The low villages are pleasant: Mangan, Singhik and Dzongu are dry and mild, with the orange season ending in January.

Matching the month to what you want

Different travellers come north for different things, and the right month follows from that. These are the pairings we use when friends ask us to pick dates. In each case, leave a buffer day, because snow, landslides and closures since the October 2023 flood can shift a plan by a day or more.

  • First snow for children: late March or early April, Lachung and Yumthang, with Zero Point if everyone is well.
  • Rhododendrons and flowers: the first three weeks of May at Yumthang, booked two weeks ahead.
  • Gurudongmar with open water: October, or the second half of May once the thaw begins.
  • Autumn colour and clear peaks: mid-October to mid-November in Lachung, with Singhik for the Kanchenjunga view.
  • Lepcha village life: October to April in Dzongu, with a Kamsel year in April for Tholung.
  • Festivals: Losar in February or March in the Bhutia villages, and the Phodong chaam in December.
  • Lowest prices with acceptable risk: early March or the second half of November.
  • Photography: October and November for clarity; late April and May for colour.

Planning around crowds and prices

Prices follow Indian holidays more than the weather. These are the patterns we plan around.

  • Most expensive: mid-April to early June, Durga Puja and Diwali weeks, and 24 December to 2 January.
  • Best value with good weather: early March, the first half of April, and November after Diwali.
  • Cheapest: July and August, when tours run at all.
  • For snow at Yumthang plus a chance of flowers, aim for the last ten days of March or early April.
  • For rhododendrons at their fullest, aim for the first three weeks of May.
  • For Gurudongmar with open water and clear sky, aim for October.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What is the best month to visit North Sikkim?

October, for clear skies, open water at Gurudongmar and the start of autumn colour in Lachung. For snow, choose March; for rhododendrons at Yumthang, choose late April to mid-May. Avoid June to August, when monsoon landslides close the road often. Check current status before you travel, as closures since 2023 change month to month.

When do the rhododendrons bloom in Yumthang?

From late April through May. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary flowers from the lower slopes upward, so early in the season you see colour near the valley floor and snow above. The fullest weeks are usually the first three of May, though a cold spring can shift that by a week or two.

When can I see snow in North Sikkim?

Almost all year at Zero Point, and from December to April at Yumthang and Lachung. The surest bet for snow you can walk on, with roads usually open, is March. January and February bring snow to the villages themselves, but high points often close for days after fresh falls.

Is it safe to visit North Sikkim in the monsoon?

We advise against it. From June to August landslides close the Teesta valley road often, and visitors have been stranded in Lachung and Lachen for days. Permits can be suspended at short notice. If you go, keep two buffer days, carry extra cash and buy insurance that covers delays. Check current status before you travel.

Is Gurudongmar Lake frozen in winter?

Mostly, from about December to April, though a patch near the shore is said to stay open. It begins to freeze in November and thaws from mid-May. October offers open, blue water and clear skies. In deep winter the road from Lachen may close after snowfall, so the lake trip is never guaranteed.

Is North Sikkim good in December?

Yes, if you like cold and can stay flexible. The first heavy snow often reaches Lachung, skies are clear, and Phodong's masked dance is held before Losoong. Gurudongmar and Zero Point may close after fresh snow. Book a room with a heater, and avoid the Christmas to New Year week if you want lower prices.

How cold is Lachung in winter?

In January, nights fall to about −8 °C and days reach around 5 °C. Lachen is a little colder, and at Gurudongmar before dawn it can be −15 °C or lower. Pack thermals, a down jacket, warm socks and gloves, and rent snow boots and a long coat in the village.

When is the cheapest time to visit North Sikkim?

July and August are cheapest, but the road risk is high. For good value with good weather, go in early March, the first half of April, or November after Diwali. Avoid mid-April to early June, Puja and Diwali weeks and the last week of December if price matters.

Can I visit North Sikkim in September?

Yes, in the second half of September, when the rain is easing and rooms are cheaper than in October. Valleys are very green and Gurudongmar is unfrozen. Remember that the October 2023 flood followed extreme late-season rain, so watch the forecast, keep dates flexible and check current status before you travel.
