Back road via Lodhoma to Rimbik
Leave the Darjeeling crowds behind on the slow valley road from Bijanbari through Lodhoma to Rimbik, the roadhead where most Sandakphu treks finish. Few tourist vehicles, village markets and long views up to the Singalila Ridge.
Most Sandakphu trekkers reach the Singalila Ridge from Maneybhanjan and come down at Rimbik. Bijanbari offers a quieter link: from the valley floor the road climbs through Lodhoma, a small market centre, and on to Rimbik in the hills below the ridge. It is useful if you are coming off a trek and want to return to Darjeeling a different way, or want to reach Rimbik without going round by Maneybhanjan.
The road is narrow and slow, with some broken stretches, and passes farm villages, cardamom gullies and patches of forest, climbing steadily from the warm valley floor into cooler hills. Shared jeeps run on parts of it, but not as often as on the Darjeeling side; ask in Bijanbari bazaar the evening before about times and fares, and be ready to change jeeps at Lodhoma. Small stalls along the way serve tea, noodles and biscuits. Carry snacks and water anyway, because a breakdown or landslide can turn a short hop into a long wait.
Landslides and road works can close sections, especially from June to September. If you are on a trek schedule, give yourself a buffer day and check current status before you travel. A reserved car gives more control and is easy to share between trekkers, bringing the cost per head close to shared-jeep fares for a group of four or five. Trekkers coming off the Singalila Ridge will find the warm valley a welcome change after nights above 3,000 m, and a hot lunch in Bijanbari a fine way to end the walk.
Cost: Shared jeep fares (ask locally) · reserved car ₹3,000–4,500 (indicative)
Questions people ask
Good to know
Can I go from Bijanbari to Rimbik by road?
Yes, a road runs from Bijanbari via Lodhoma to Rimbik, the usual end point of Sandakphu treks. Shared jeeps run on the route but less often than on main roads, so ask in Bijanbari the evening before. A reserved car costs roughly ₹3,000–4,500. Check road conditions, especially in the monsoon.
Is the Bijanbari route a good way back from a Sandakphu trek?
It works well if you want a change from the Maneybhanjan road. From Rimbik you drive down via Lodhoma to Bijanbari and then climb to Darjeeling via Pulbazar, seeing the Little Rangeet valley on the way. It is slower than the usual return, so allow most of a day.
How long does Bijanbari to Rimbik take?
Allow roughly two to three hours by jeep, depending on road conditions, stops and the wait for a shared jeep to fill. Times stretch in the monsoon when landslides slow traffic. Ask locally for current timings and check current status before you travel.
