The drive down via Ging and Pulbazar

Ride down from Darjeeling's ridge to the warm floor of the Little Rangeet valley, past Ging tea estate and the bridge market at Pulbazar. In 35 km the air, crops and pace of life all change.

This is a journey through the layers of a Himalayan hillside. Leaving Darjeeling, the road drops off the north side of the ridge into tea country, where the rows of Ging tea estate cling to slopes that seem too steep to stand on. Below the tea come terraced villages, bamboo clumps and orange trees, and then Pulbazar, a roadside market whose name simply means bridge market. The temperature climbs with every hairpin, and jackets come off one by one.

Stop at Pulbazar for a glass of tea and watch the jeep traffic: sacks of vegetables going up to Darjeeling, cooking gas and rice coming down, students and office workers squeezed into every seat. Then carry on to Bijanbari, about 760 m above sea level and noticeably warmer, for lunch in a bazaar eating house: rice, dal and a vegetable curry, or a plate of momos. Walk the market lane after lunch. Shops sell farm tools, school uniforms, cooking pots and seasonal produce from the valley, which tells you more about how people live here than any sight could.

You can do the whole trip by shared jeep for under ₹300 return, or hire a car for flexibility and photo stops along the tea slopes. Start by 8 am; return jeeps thin out in the afternoon, and you do not want to be waiting at a roadside stand as the light goes. Take a sweater for Darjeeling and a T-shirt for the valley. In the monsoon, landslides can close the road for hours, so check current status before you travel and keep the afternoon free in case of delays.

Cost: Shared jeep ₹100–150 a seat · car ₹2,500–4,000 a day

Questions people ask

Good to know

How long is the drive from Darjeeling to Bijanbari?

About 35 km and 1.5–2 hours each way by shared jeep or car, longer if you stop at Pulbazar and the tea gardens. The road is narrow and winding with a long descent of roughly 1,300 m. Allow a full morning for the round trip if you want lunch in the valley.

Is Bijanbari worth a day trip from Darjeeling?

It is worth it if you want to see ordinary hill life rather than sights. The drive through Ging tea estate and Pulbazar down to a warm river valley is the main attraction. There are no ticketed sights in Bijanbari itself, so go for the journey, the market and a walk by the Little Rangeet.

What does Pulbazar mean?

Pulbazar means bridge market: pul is the word for a bridge in Nepali and Hindi, and bazar means market. It is a small market village on the road between Darjeeling and Bijanbari, and the block that covers this part of the valley takes its name from it.
