Dawn over Kanchenjunga from the ridge
Watch first light turn the Kanchenjunga massif pink and then white from the edge of the village, with no crowd, no ticket and no 4 am jeep. Two mornings give you a far better chance than one.
Kanchenjunga, at 8,586 m the third-highest mountain on Earth, rises to the north across the deep valleys of the Rangeet and its tributaries. From Chatakpur's ridge the whole massif lines up on clear mornings, with the lesser peaks of Sikkim spread on either side. The village sits at about 2,400 m, high enough to look over much of the intervening forest, and you watch it from a homestay courtyard or a short walk up the slope.
Get up about 30 minutes before sunrise, dress warmly and take a hot drink outside; most hosts will have tea ready if you ask the night before. The first light catches the summit before anything else, turning it a pale pink, then gold; within 15–20 minutes the colour drains to white as the sun climbs and the valleys below begin to fill with light. Your host will point you to the best open spot near the house, often a terrace edge or a small rise above the village. Keep your phone or camera warm in a pocket, because batteries drain fast in the cold.
Views depend on weather far more than on the calendar. October to early December and March to April give the most clear dawns, and January and February can be very clear but bitterly cold. In the monsoon, from June to September, you are likely to see only cloud, and the forest track is at its worst. If the first morning fails, the second often works, which is one reason we suggest two nights. Even on a cloudy dawn, the mist moving through the forest below the village is worth getting up for.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can you see Kanchenjunga from Chatakpur?
Yes, on clear days the whole Kanchenjunga massif is visible from the village ridge to the north. Clear dawns are most common from October to early December and in March and April. In the monsoon from June to September cloud usually hides it. Staying two nights gives you two chances at the view.
Is Chatakpur better than Tiger Hill for sunrise?
It is quieter rather than higher. Tiger Hill, at about 2,567 m, is a little higher and on very clear days shows Everest far to the west, but it can be crowded in season. Chatakpur gives a similar Kanchenjunga view from a village courtyard with no jeeps, tickets or queues.
What time is sunrise at Chatakpur?
Roughly 4.45–5.15 am in April and May and around 6–6.20 am in December and January. Be outside about 30 minutes earlier to catch the first pink light on the summit. Ask your host the evening before; they know the timing and the best open spot near the house.
