Forest trail along Senchal to Tiger Hill

Walk out of Chatakpur through the oak, rhododendron and cryptomeria forest of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary towards Tiger Hill. A full, quiet day on forest paths with a local guide, ending near Darjeeling's highest viewpoint. A car waits at the far end.

TimeFull day, about 4–6 hours one way CostGuide ₹1,000–1,500 a day … Altitude2,400m

Chatakpur and Tiger Hill both sit on the Senchal ridge, and a forest route links them through the sanctuary. It is one of the few long walks near Darjeeling that stays almost entirely under trees. The path climbs and drops over the ridge through oak, magnolia and rhododendron, with patches of tall cryptomeria planted in the British era. In March and April the rhododendrons flower red along the way. Birds and the occasional barking deer are more common company than other walkers.

We strongly suggest going with a local guide arranged by your homestay. Paths branch without signposts, old tracks lead off in confusing directions, and mist can close in by late morning, turning a familiar ridge into a maze of grey trunks. Timings vary with route and pace, so plan a full day, carry lunch, water and a rain layer, and arrange a car to meet you at the Tiger Hill end for the drive back to Darjeeling or Ghoom. Tell your homestay your expected finish time, and keep a charged phone, even though signal comes and goes.

Rules for walking inside the sanctuary can change, and the forest department may require permission, fees or a guide for routes beyond the village. Ask your homestay when you book and check current status before you travel. Avoid the monsoon months, when leeches, landslips and slippery clay make the walk unpleasant and sometimes unsafe. The best conditions come from October to December, when the ground is dry and the air clear, and in March and April, when the rhododendrons flower. Wear proper walking shoes; trainers with worn soles are a common regret on the descent.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How long is the walk from Chatakpur to Tiger Hill?

Plan a full day: most walkers take roughly 4–6 hours one way depending on route, pace and stops. Distances quoted locally vary because there is more than one path along the Senchal ridge. Start by 7 am, carry lunch and water, and arrange a car to collect you at the Tiger Hill end.

Do I need a guide for the Chatakpur–Tiger Hill trail?

Yes, we would not do it without one. Paths fork through the sanctuary without signs, mist can drop quickly, and forest rules may require an accompanying local. Your homestay can arrange a villager who knows the route, usually for about ₹1,000–1,500 a day. Confirm the current rules when you book.

Is the Tiger Hill forest walk safe?

With a local guide in dry weather it is a reasonable walk for fit people. The risks are getting lost, slipping on wet clay and being caught in mist or rain. Black bears live in Senchal but are rarely seen. Avoid June to September, walk in daylight and tell your homestay your plan.
