Walk the ridge road from Takdah to Tinchuley
A 3 km climb from Takdah to Tinchuley through pines, orange orchards and village houses, timed to reach the Gumbadara viewpoint while Kanchenjunga is still clear. Tea in Tinchuley, then an easy walk back for breakfast.

Takdah and Tinchuley are neighbours, about 3 km apart, and the walk between them is the best way to understand both. Takdah sits lower among the cantonment bungalows and pines. Tinchuley sits higher, at about 1,770 m, a farming village of orange orchards, small tea plots and homestays, with a viewpoint at Gumbadara. The road climbs steadily between them, and on foot you notice what a car hides: the terraces, the cow sheds, children walking to school, prayer flags on bamboo poles.
Leave Takdah around 6 am in the clear months. Kanchenjunga is most often visible early, before cloud rises from the valleys, and the walk up takes about an hour at a steady pace. From Gumbadara the view runs north to the snow peaks and east down into the Teesta valley. Take a flask of tea or buy a cup in the village, and give yourself half an hour at the top. Even when the mountains hide, the valley and the light on the ridges are worth the climb.
Walk back the same way or, if you have arranged it, let a car collect you in Tinchuley. The road has light traffic, but jeeps come fast round the bends, so keep to the edge and walk in single file. Orange season, roughly November to January, is the prettiest time: fruit hangs over the walls and you may be offered some by the families who grow it. If they sell to you, pay what they ask; it will be cheap, and it is their income.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How long is the walk from Takdah to Tinchuley?
About 3 km each way by road, roughly an hour uphill and 45 minutes back at an easy pace. Add half an hour at the Gumbadara viewpoint and time for tea in the village, and the whole outing fits into a morning of about three hours.
Will we see Kanchenjunga on the walk?
On clear mornings from October to early December and in March and April, often yes, from Gumbadara and other open spots near Tinchuley. Cloud usually builds by 9 or 10 am, so go early. In the monsoon the mountains are hidden most days. No one can promise a view, so plan two mornings if it matters.
Is it safe to walk on the road?
Yes, with ordinary care. Traffic is light, but jeeps and cars take the bends fast, so walk single file on the edge, keep children close and avoid walking after dark. Wear something bright in mist, which can cut visibility to a few metres within minutes.
