Sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill

The classic Darjeeling dawn: a 4 am jeep to the 2,567 m summit, tea from a vendor in the dark, Kanchenjunga turning pink before the sun clears the eastern hills and, on the clearest days, Everest far to the west. Back via Ghoom and Batasia by breakfast.

The night before, ask your hotel or the taxi stand for a three-point tour: Tiger Hill at dawn, then Ghoom monastery and Batasia Loop on the way back. Expect ₹1,500–2,200 for the car, or ₹250–400 for a shared seat in season. The driver will call around 4 am. The road climbs 11 km through Ghoom and Jorebunglow, then up through the Senchal forest; in peak weeks jeeps queue on the last stretch, and some passengers walk the final few hundred metres.

At the top, find a place on the rail of the pavilion or the open ground beside it at least 30 minutes before sunrise. Vendors sell tea and coffee for ₹20–50. The sky lightens over the eastern hills first; then, a few minutes before the sun appears, the summit of Kanchenjunga, 8,586 m, catches the light, pink first and then gold, while the valleys below are still dark. On very clear mornings look west for Everest, Lhotse and Makalu, small and far beyond the Singalila Ridge.

The pavilion has ticketed levels; the enclosed upper floors are warmer but cost more, and the view from outside is just as good. In winter it is close to freezing, so wear everything you brought. Weather decides everything here: if cloud sits on the range, the sunrise is only a brightening of grey. Keep a second morning free, and in peak weeks check current status before you travel, as vehicle passes and limits on the summit road have changed in recent years.

Questions people ask

Good to know

What time should I leave Darjeeling for Tiger Hill?

Around 4 am in most months, a little earlier in May and June, when the sun rises before 5 am, and slightly later in midwinter. Aim to reach the top 30 minutes before sunrise. In peak weeks leave earlier, because jeeps queue on the summit road. Your driver will know the day's timing; confirm it with him the evening before.

Can you see Everest from Tiger Hill?

Yes, on very clear days. Everest, Lhotse and Makalu appear as small points far to the west, beyond the Singalila Ridge, while Kanchenjunga fills the north. Your best chances are from October to December, soon after sunrise and before haze builds. Bring binoculars, and ask a driver or a local at the rail to point out the peaks.

Is the Tiger Hill sunrise worth it in winter?

Usually, yes. December and January often bring the clearest air of the year, and crowds are smaller outside the Christmas week. The price is the cold: dawn at the top can be close to or below freezing, with wind. Wear a down jacket, cap, gloves and thick socks, and take a flask or buy tea at the top.
