Walk down from Tiger Hill through Senchal
After sunrise, send your car ahead and walk the road down from the summit towards Jorebunglow and Ghoom, roughly 5 km and mostly downhill, through the oak and rhododendron of Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary. Birds, mist and silence, with the driver waiting at the bottom.

Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary was declared in 1915, which makes it one of the oldest protected forests in India. Most visitors cross it twice in the dark and never really see it. Walking down after sunrise changes that. The road from the summit drops through mixed forest of oak, rhododendron and planted cryptomeria, and in the hour after the jeeps leave it is one of the quietest stretches of road anywhere near Darjeeling.
Walk slowly and listen. The forest holds barking deer, which you will hear more often than see, and the rare Himalayan black bear, which you almost certainly will not. Birds are the real reward: in winter tits, laughingthrushes and other hill species move through the canopy in mixed flocks, and the rhododendrons flower red in March and April. Morning mist sometimes drifts up through the trees from the valleys below, so wear something bright and keep to the edge of the road.
Agree the plan with your driver at the top: he drives down empty and waits at Jorebunglow or at Ghoom monastery, and you walk roughly 5 km, about 1.5–2 hours. Wear shoes with grip, carry water, and stay on the road, because forest paths branch off and are easy to lose. The sanctuary is a protected area, so do not pick plants or leave litter. Rules on walking inside sanctuaries change, so check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask
Good to know
How long is the walk down from Tiger Hill?
Roughly 5 km along the road from the summit to Jorebunglow and Ghoom, mostly downhill, about 1.5–2 hours at an easy pace with stops for birds. Ask your driver to wait at the bottom, which most will do on a three-point tour if told in advance. Allow extra time if you stop at Ghoom monastery on the way.
Will I see wild animals in Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary?
Probably not large ones. Barking deer live in the forest and are heard more than seen, and the Himalayan black bear is rare and shy. Birds are the sure thing: mixed flocks of tits, laughingthrushes and other hill species, best early in the morning and in winter. Bring binoculars and walk quietly to see the most.
Is the walk safe for families?
Yes, on the road in daylight. It is downhill and mostly gentle, and children often enjoy it more than the crowded summit. Keep them on the inside of the road, as jeeps still come down after sunrise, and carry warm layers and water. Avoid the walk in thick mist or heavy rain, when visibility on the bends is poor.
