Afternoon safari in the elephant corridor

Chilapata's jeep routes run through dense forest on the corridor between Jaldapara and Buxa. Elephants are the most frequent large animals, with rhinos, gaur and deer possible. The afternoon slot catches herds moving towards water.

The forest department runs Chilapata safaris from the gate near Kodalbasti and Hasimara, booked through the same online system as Jaldapara but as a separate route. A registered jeep with a guide takes you through sal and mixed forest, along streams and past the Nalraja Garh ruins.

Because Chilapata is a corridor, elephants are often on the move here, sometimes in large herds with calves. Drivers stop at a distance and keep the engine running, ready to back off; listen to them. Rhinos stray in from Jaldapara, and gaur, sambar, barking deer and wild boar use the forest. Birds are everywhere.

Sightings can be quick in dense forest, so keep cameras ready and voices low. Carry insect repellent, water and a scarf for dust. Check current status before you travel, as routes were affected by the October 2025 floods.

Cost: ₹2,500–3,500 a jeep for up to 6 (indicative)

Questions people ask

Good to know

How is the Chilapata safari different from Jaldapara?

Chilapata is dense forest rather than open grassland, with shorter views and a greater chance of elephants, while Jaldapara's grassland is better for rhinos. Chilapata's route also includes the Nalraja Garh ruins. Many visitors do one of each.

Is the Chilapata safari safe with elephants around?

Yes, with registered drivers and guides who know elephant behaviour. They keep a distance, avoid blocking a herd's path and will reverse if an elephant is uneasy. Stay seated, quiet and inside the jeep, and never ask the driver to get closer.

Where does the Chilapata safari start?

From the Chilapata gate on the Hasimara–Kodalbasti side, about 20–30 minutes from Madarihat. Your booking will name the reporting point. Arrive 30 minutes early with ID. Lodges at Mendabari and Malangi are close.
