Forest birding on the Chilapata edge

Chilapata's tall mixed forest holds hornbills, woodpeckers, barbets, minivets and many more. Birding is done from lodge compounds, forest-edge roads and the safari jeep, with a local guide who knows calls and safe spots.

Dense lowland forest like Chilapata's is a place to bird by ear first. In the early morning, barbets call from the canopy, drongos mimic everything, woodpeckers drum and green pigeons whistle. Oriental pied and great hornbills cross between tall trees with heavy wingbeats, and raptors such as crested serpent eagles soar once the air warms.

Walk only where it is permitted and safe: lodge compounds, the edges of forest villages and open roads, with a local guide. Inside the forest, birding is done from the safari jeep, which is better than it sounds, since many birds ignore vehicles. Ask your driver to stop where mixed flocks are moving.

Bring binoculars, a field guide or app and insect repellent. Winter mornings are cool and misty; birds start a little after sunrise. Elephants share these edges, so stay alert and leave any spot where staff advise caution.

Questions people ask

Good to know

Which birds are common in Chilapata?

Oriental pied and great hornbills, several barbets and woodpeckers, drongos, minivets, green pigeons, bulbuls, orioles and raptors like the crested serpent eagle. Winter adds migrants such as flycatchers and warblers. Variety is best from November to April.

Can I walk in Chilapata forest for birding?

Not freely inside the forest; entry is by jeep safari with a guide. Birding on foot is possible in lodge compounds and on village edges with a local guide. Elephants and rhinos use the forest, so solo walks into the trees are unsafe.

Do I need a guide for birding at Chilapata?

It helps a lot. A local guide knows calls, flock routes and where it is safe to stand on forest edges. Fees are modest, roughly ₹500–1,000 for a morning. Ask your lodge to arrange one the evening before.
