Dawn jeep safari for Jaldapara's rhinos
The first jeep safari of the day into Jaldapara's grassland gives the best chance of rhinos, grazing in the open before the sun gets high. Book online, report at Madarihat with ID and be ready in the cold.

Jaldapara's safaris run in fixed shifts, usually two or three in the morning and one in the afternoon, with timings that change with the season; in winter the first slot leaves around 6 am. You book online through the forest department, report at the counter in Madarihat with ID, and board a registered jeep with a guide for a route through grassland and forest.
The park's tall grass is the rhino's habitat. In the first hour, rhinos are often out in short grass along the tracks, in wet hollows or at the edge of the forest, and a calm animal at 30–50 m is a common winter sight. Gaur, hog deer, sambar, wild boar and peafowl are frequent; elephants and leopards are possible.
Wear layers in December and January, when open jeeps at 6 am are cold, and bring a scarf for dust. Keep voices low when animals are near and never ask the driver to go off the track. After the October 2025 floods some routes were damaged; check current status before you travel.
Cost: ₹2,500–4,000 a jeep for up to 6 (indicative)
Questions people ask
Good to know
How do I book a Jaldapara jeep safari?
Online through the West Bengal forest department's booking system, or at the Madarihat counter if seats remain. You pay for the jeep, entry, guide and fees, roughly ₹2,500–4,000 for a six-seat jeep in 2025–26 for Indian visitors. Bring the ID used for booking.
What is the chance of seeing a rhino at Jaldapara?
High in winter, especially on the first morning slot, because the park holds around 330 rhinos and they graze in open grass early. It is never guaranteed. Two safaris on different days improve your odds a great deal.
Which Jaldapara safari slot is best?
The first morning slot, when animals are active and the light is soft. The afternoon slot is good too, especially for elephants and gaur moving to water. Midday slots are hotter and quieter. Dress warmly for winter mornings.
