Up to Paren for valley views
Paren is a small hill village above Jhalong with a forest corporation camp, cooler air and views down the Jaldhaka valley. A short drive up and a stroll around the village make a good half-day, or stay the night.
The road from Jhalong to Paren climbs through forest and small farms, with the valley opening below at each bend. Paren itself is a scatter of houses, a school, a few shops and the forest corporation's Paren Eco Tourism Centre. It is noticeably cooler than Jhalong, and the forest edge is close.
Walk the village roads, look out over the valley towards the Bhutan hills, and stop for tea at a shop. Birders find forest species here that are scarcer on the river: laughingthrushes, minivets, sunbirds and woodpeckers. In autumn and early winter, cardamom harvesting and drying may be under way.
Paren is small and quiet, and that is its appeal. If you want a night with no traffic and no other tourists, book the corporation's centre or ask in Jhalong about homestays. Check current status before you travel, especially after the monsoon.
