Crossing into Sikkim at the Rangpo checkpost

The border crossing on NH10 where travellers enter Sikkim from West Bengal. For Indians it is usually a quick ID check; for foreign nationals it is where the Restricted Area Permit is checked or issued. Know the rules before you arrive.

Rangpo's checkpost stands at the bridge where NH10 crosses from West Bengal into Sikkim. For Indian nationals, entry to Sikkim itself needs no permit, though police may check vehicles and ask for photo ID, especially on reserved cars and at busy times. Shared jeep passengers usually stay in their seats. Permits are needed only for restricted areas further on, such as the Silk Route, Tsomgo and Nathu La, and North Sikkim, and those are arranged separately.

Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim. It is free and has been available online in advance and at the Rangpo checkpost on arrival, with a passport, valid Indian visa and passport photos. Ask your driver to stop at the foreigners' counter; do not let a shared jeep carry you past it, as you will be turned back later. The permit is usually valid for 30 days and can be extended in Gangtok. Rules change, so check current status before you travel.

Queues build up at weekends, on holidays and when NH10 reopens after a closure, as backed-up traffic comes through at once. Have documents ready in a folder rather than buried in luggage. Coming back down, there is usually little checking on the way out of Sikkim. Be aware that items cheaper in Sikkim, such as liquor, are subject to West Bengal's limits once you cross the bridge.
