A highway thali at Rangpo
Rangpo's highway eateries feed drivers and travellers all day with rice thalis, momos, chowmein and tea. If you are held up at the checkpost or by a road closure, this is where to eat well and cheaply.

Rangpo lives off the road, and so do its kitchens. Along NH10 and in the bazaar, small eateries serve the truck drivers, jeep drivers and passengers who pass through all day. The standard meal is a rice thali: rice, dal, a vegetable or two, a pickle and a choice of egg, chicken or fish curry, refilled as you go. Momos, chowmein, thukpa and puri sabzi fill the rest of the menu, with sweet milky tea at every table.
Prices are local and fair, roughly ₹100–200 for a full meal, less for snacks. The best sign of a good place is the number of drivers eating there. Rangpo's low height means it is warm for most of the year, so food is cooked fresh and turned over fast at the busy spots. Vegetarians do well with dal, rice, vegetables and paneer dishes.
If a road closure leaves you waiting, Rangpo is a better place to sit it out than a roadside verge. Eat, drink plenty of water, and use the time to check the road with your driver. Carry small notes, though many places take UPI. If you are heading on to Rongli and the Silk Route, buy snacks and water here too.
