Sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Lungthung
A pre-dawn drive from Zuluk to Lungthung, about 3,900 m, to watch the first light reach Kanchenjunga and the snow peaks to the west. On a clear morning the range turns pink, then gold, within twenty minutes. It is cold, early and, on a good day, the best hour of the trip.

Lungthung is a small settlement and army post on the Silk Route above Thambi, at about 3,900 m. It faces west across the folded hills of Sikkim to the Kanchenjunga range, and on clear mornings the whole line of snow peaks stands up on the horizon. Drivers based in Zuluk know the drill: they knock on your door around 4–4.30 am, and you leave in the dark so you are in place before the sun rises behind you and lights the summits first.
What you see depends entirely on the weather. October and November give the most reliable clear dawns, with December, March and April close behind. On a good morning the top of Kanchenjunga turns pink, then orange, then white as the light moves down the mountain, and the valleys below stay dark and full of cloud. On a poor morning you see cloud. There is no way to know in advance, which is why we suggest two nights in Zuluk if you can spare them.
Dress for minus temperatures in any month: thermal layers, a down jacket, gloves, a woollen hat and thick socks. Take a flask of tea from your homestay, as stalls at Lungthung may not be open at dawn. Walk slowly at this height and do not run for the best spot. On the way down, stop at Thambi View Point for the loops in morning light, and be back in Zuluk for breakfast by about 8.

Questions people ask
Good to know
What time should we leave Zuluk for the Lungthung sunrise?
Leave Zuluk between about 4.30 and 5 am, a little earlier in summer and a little later in winter. The drive up takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on road and snow. Ask your homestay or driver the evening before, because they time it by the season and the weather.
Can you see Kanchenjunga from Lungthung?
Yes, on clear mornings the Kanchenjunga range is visible to the west from Lungthung, about 3,900 m. October and November give the best odds, followed by December and the spring months. From June to September cloud usually hides it, and even in good months the view can disappear within an hour or two of sunrise.
Is Lungthung safe for children and older travellers?
At about 3,900 m, Lungthung is high enough to cause headaches and breathlessness, especially if you came straight from the plains. Sleep at Zuluk first, keep children warm, move slowly and drink water. People with heart or lung problems should take medical advice before the trip, and anyone feeling unwell should go down.
