Kanchenjunga from dawn to dusk at Charkhole
Charkhole's ridge faces the Kanchenjunga range with almost nothing in the way. Watch it at dawn from your window, at midday from the garden and at sunset with tea, without getting into a car.
Most viewpoints in these hills make you work for Kanchenjunga: a pre-dawn drive, a crowd, a short window before cloud rises. Charkhole is different. The ridge looks north across a deep valley to the range, and on clear winter days the mountains stay in view long after sunrise.
Set an alarm for 30 minutes before sunrise, about 5.30 am in October and March and after 6 am in December and January, and watch the summit turn pink, then gold. Go back to bed if you like. By mid-morning the snow is bright white; by late afternoon the light softens again, and sunset can colour the whole range.
Clear days are most likely from mid-October to early December and again in February and March. In April haze builds, and from June to September the peaks are usually hidden. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens; the range is well over 80 km away, and you will want to pick out the individual peaks.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Is the Kanchenjunga view from Charkhole good?
Yes, it is one of the most open views in the Kalimpong hills, across a deep valley with little in the way. On clear days from October to April you can watch the range from your homestay at dawn, midday and sunset. In the monsoon it is usually hidden.
What is the best month to see Kanchenjunga from Charkhole?
Late October to early December has the clearest skies, with February and March next. January is often clear but very cold at dawn. April brings haze, and from June to September cloud usually hides the peaks.
Do I need to go to a viewpoint in Charkhole?
No. Most homestays have the view from their rooms or gardens. A forest trail leads to a higher viewpoint if you want a walk, but the village itself is the viewpoint.
