The classic Neora day starts at Lava. The afternoon before, go to the forest range office with ID to arrange the permit, a registered guide and a vehicle; your homestay can help. In the morning the jeep climbs on forest roads to the start of the permitted trail, and from there you walk.

The forest changes with every 300 m of height: broadleaf trees with orchids and ferns, then rhododendron, which flowers from March to May, then bamboo thickets and conifers. Your guide will point out red panda habitat, scratch marks on trees, droppings and the calls of barking deer. Birding is excellent: laughingthrushes, fulvettas, sibias and, with real luck, a satyr tragopan on the trail at dawn.

Expect a full day, back by mid-afternoon. Costs vary with the route and group size: entry fees of about ₹150–300 per person, a guide at ₹600–1,000 and the jeep at ₹2,500–3,500. Carry lunch, water, rain gear and a warm layer. Routes and fees change: check current status before you travel.

Questions people ask

Good to know

How do I get a permit for Neora Valley National Park?

Permits are issued by the forest department, usually through the range office at Lava for the northern routes. Bring photo ID and arrange it the day before, along with a registered guide and vehicle. Foreign nationals may need extra paperwork. Rules and routes change, so check current status before you travel.

Can I go into Neora Valley without a guide?

No. Entry is only with a permit and a registered guide on permitted routes. The forest is dense, trails are unmarked in places, and there are bears and leopards. Guides also know the birds and the signs of animals, which makes the day far richer.

Is Neora Valley open in the monsoon?

No. The park usually closes from about mid-June to mid-September for the monsoon and the wildlife breeding season. Even in the shoulder months, trails can close after landslides. Check current status before you travel.
