Sunrise from the Chimney ridge
Step out of your homestay before dawn and walk a few minutes to an open bend on the ridge. Watch light spread over layers of hills and valley mist, with snow peaks to the north on the clearest winter mornings.
Chimney's height, about 2,200 m, puts it above much of the morning mist that settles in the valleys. On a clear day between October and March, you can watch the sun rise over a sea of cloud with dark ridges sticking through it.
Ask your homestay host for the nearest open bend; the forest blocks the view in many places. Be out 20–30 minutes before sunrise and dress for the cold: it can be near freezing in December and January.
Views of the snow peaks to the north are possible but not guaranteed here; if Kanchenjunga is your priority, go to Ahaldara or Darjeeling's viewpoints. Chimney's gift is the light and the silence.

Questions people ask
Good to know
Can I see Kanchenjunga from Chimney?
Sometimes, from open bends on the ridge on very clear mornings in winter, but trees block much of the northern view. If seeing Kanchenjunga is important, plan a dawn at Ahaldara near Latpanchar or at Darjeeling. Chimney is better for sunrise over valley mist.
What time is sunrise near Kurseong?
Roughly 5 am in May and June and about 6.15 am in December and January. Be at your viewpoint 20–30 minutes earlier for the best light. Your homestay host can tell you the exact time and the nearest open spot.
Is it very cold at Chimney in winter?
Yes, for the hills. At about 2,200 m, December and January nights can drop close to freezing, and dawn on the ridge is windy. Bring thermals, gloves, a warm hat and a down jacket. Snow is rare but not unknown.
