Morning at Eagle's Crag
Climb to Kurseong's best town viewpoint, a deck built around the old water reservoir above the bazaar. On clear mornings you see the plains, the tea gardens and the snow peaks to the north.

Eagle's Crag is the high point just above Kurseong bazaar, a short, steep walk from the station area. The top is built around a water reservoir that supplies part of the town, with a viewing deck, benches, and a small café. Locals come up at dawn to walk, and on a clear day the view runs from the Siliguri plains and the Teesta and Mahananda river channels to the snows behind Darjeeling.
Go early. From October to March the mornings are usually clear until 9 or 10 am, after which haze rises from the plains. In the monsoon you will often stand inside a cloud. The climb takes 20–30 minutes from the bazaar.
Combine it with Netaji's house at Giddapahar on the same morning, or walk on towards Dow Hill if you want a longer day. Carry water; the café keeps irregular hours.
Cost: Free or a small fee
Questions people ask
Good to know
Can I see Kanchenjunga from Eagle's Crag?
On clear mornings from October to March you can see the snow peaks to the north, though Kanchenjunga is not as dominant as it is from Darjeeling. The best and most reliable view from the Crag is south over the plains and the tea gardens. Go before 8.30 am for the clearest air.
How long is the walk to Eagle's Crag?
About 20–30 minutes uphill from Kurseong bazaar or the station, on a steep lane and steps. It is fine for most walkers with a few stops. Taxis can drive most of the way if you have older people or small children with you.
Is Eagle's Crag worth visiting in the monsoon?
Only for the mood. From late June to September you will often see little more than cloud, and the steps can be slippery. In that season, visit a tea garden instead and come back to the Crag on a clear morning in October or November.
